M159 Off fuagvmuua Students, Faculty, and Friends: The University of Southern Mississippi has no problems not caused, at least in part, by its rapid growth. The University of Southern Mississippi has no problems which continued rapid growth cannot help to solve. Thus, in two sentences, we can sum up the University situation as we begin our second half a century of year- round, day and night service to the people of Mississippi. This institution was founded to fill a need--to train teachers for Mississippi rural schools in the early years of the twentieth century. We continue to train teachers--not just for rural schools, but for all schoolsg and not just for Mississippi, but for all the world. And we do much more than train teachers. As the fastest growing university in a rapidly changing state, we have accepted the full range of higher-education responsibilities in Mississippi's development. The highest of these responsibilities is the basic 1ibera1 art of problem solving. Problem solving--beginning with perception of the problem and its careful definitiong continuing with analysis and the gather- ing of pertinent information and inspirational insightsg leading to the formulation of hypotheses and their testingg and culminating in a checked-out solution which can form the basis for decision- making-- is an intellectual process which shows man at his best. The University of Southern Mississippi is a problem-solving tool for the people of Mississippi. In 1962-1963 we are applying the precision tool of faculty and student intelligence to our own Self Study. From this Self Study process we expect to emerge with sharper focus on our future. The 1963 Southerner will forever re- mind us of the adventure of this busy and wonderful year. Y sincerely I William D. McCain President I9 IBM -tllfw
