'llui New faces, new buildings are seen on every corner of Mississippfs largest school. When this university was be- gun over fifty years ago. there were only five brick build- ings on the campus. Those included the President's home. College Hall, Hattiesburg Hall, Forrest County Hall, and an industrial cottage for women. Construction has never stopped over the years, and to- day it strains to provide living quarters and classroom facilities for the ever-growing student body. University Commons is now a symbol of hard work fulfilled in becoming a university. It and all other new buildings are a physical sign of growth which is felt by every member of the student body, faculty and adminis- tration. As USM builds it adds to a reputation, once only spread in Mississippi, but now a reputation that is cover- ing the South, the Nation, and even other countries. As students, we owe our school a sense of increasing not only the physical construction and growth, but a growth of character and fame as well. ig-,M

With each year of Southern's development, it is easier to see the part it was intended to play in the educational sphere of the state. Other things com- prise college life, however, and as Mississippi Southern College became a university, all other phases of the school hurried to catch up with progress. School spirit increases as we play bigger and better teams in sports, and the L'Pride of Mississippi and Dixie Darling move higher in the fame they are creating. The world of Greeks, social and honorary, and all other extracurricular parts of Southern's life, exem- plify its many years of worthy associations. fi , ,Mal ra X
