ffr2rf1?w fer! lb ..... We dedicate this, the 1942 Southerner to Miss Beedie Smith. our Granny. To Granny who has been our best friend. our wisest COLII1- cilor. our most patient listener. our most understanding teacher, and our nurse in things spiritual, mental and physical. lt is in appreciation for all this that we dedicate this book to this une who loves pine trees-whose life has reflected this love in that every thought and deed points upward-just as the pine tree's branchesg that her cheerfulness is the same the year around-just as the pine tree's needlesg whose thoughts come from the depths of mind and heart-just as the pine tree gains sustenance from the depths of earth: and, whose head Imws in reverence to Gud-just as the pine tree bows to the winds ul' heaven. She has shown us what true fellowship with God can mean. We are all for yuu, Granny, 3

Jw fgfevoyuihbuf ' I I E Yes, V for victory. But that same V might also stand for the Valor, the Vim, the Vitality, and the Vigor with which our boys have entered military service. We know what these boys have given up. We know that careers have had to be abandoned, that dreams have failed to materialize, that homes have been broken. We know that they have been taught to love their neighbors, to respect the rights of others. to return kindness for ill treatment. to give all people a fair chance in life, and, we know that they believe all these things to be right or they would not be willing to go to the field of battle to defend them. It is with all sincerity that we who must serve in other ways, pledge our prayers, our money, our working and think- ing hours, our best efforts and our faith to those who are fighting that democracy may live. 10
