Q Q My book, HOW TO GET YOUR MAN-AND KEEP HIM, was a best seller almost im- mediately, and lecture invitations began to pour in. I thought of my Alma Mater Mississippi Southern, and what a hard time the poor girls had. I instructed my manager to write for an engagement. The surprising reply came: We need your series of lectures, but for the boys, not the girls. We have about five times as many boys as girls, and the boys get awfully discouraged. This made me stop and think. Evidently things had been happening at Mississippi Southern in a big way. I l0St no time in finding out. 4 gf, : When I arrived at the enormous neon sign Mississippi Southern, I boldly en- tered the campus. I just as boldly started looking for the administration building. In five minutes I realized that I was lost. Never had I seen such an imposing array of buildings. Very timidly I asked a student how to go. Really, I remarked, I didn't know that Mississippi Southern had grown so. I was graduated from here in 194O. What!', he said in a shocked tone. Mississippi Southern gets national publicity. We won the Rose Bowl game this year. 'Tm sorry, I excused myself humbly, but I've been traveling all over the world the past few years, and I haven't kept up with everything. The student graciously offered to take me on a tour of the campus. I stared with open mouth, and could only shake my head and murmur weakly, Five dormi- tories for girls and nine for men, besides sorority and fraternity houses. When I was just about to tell my friend that I was getting cross-eyed, he sug- gested that we go to chapel. We sat in the back of the huge auditorium packed with students. I heard a voice repeat, A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. I looked more closely, I had not made a mistake. It was Dr. George. My new friend whispered in my ear, He has had offers from every large school in the country, but he prefers to stay at Mississippi Southern. Looking around I saw familiar faces - Dr. Walker and Dr. Weathersby, Dr. Peterson, and the rest-but I saw no women teachers that I recognized. I asked about it after chapel. Dr. Lowrey informed me that only a year or two after I grad- uated all of the women teachers got married. The shocks of the day had been too much. I quietly fainted. -FRANCES WALTHALL. llglf lfgllgllgll ll Q f il lf li lf ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll l ll ll ll llalla 9 ll ll ll9ll ll l ll llell ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll llflwll ll lwll ll 'L ll 9.0 0 Sept. 19-School opened today. After a long lazy summer I was really glad to get back to work. But best of all was seeing all the old students and getting ac- quainted with the new ones. The fact that some of the new ones are good looking doesn't make any difference-much. Sept. 29-First football game of the season with Troy Teachers. There were so many gorgeous new fall outfits scattered about that I had a hard time looking at the ball game. Incidentally, we won. Oct. 1-I can hardly believe it's true. When the boys move into the new dor- mitory, Forrest County Hall is going to be a Senior Dormitory. Hurrah! Oct. 10-They say it will be only a few days until we move. Oct. 15-Will move next week. Oct. 22-Slight delay. Will move next week. Oct. 29-Another delay. Will move next week. Nov. 1-We moved today! Such a job. When everything was moved I just sat down on top of everything. I didn't feel that I could move for a week. The boys govled day before yesterday. They have a queer name for the dormitory- The oc . Nov. 4-We just had time to straighten everything up a little for Homecoming today. Wish Homecoming came more often. Everybody was here. Nov. 23-Thanksgiving holidays. Dec. 15-Began worrying about what to give people for Christmas. If I only knew what I was going to get, it would simplify the matter enormously. Dec. 18, 19-Examinations. Deep groan expresses my feelings. Dec. 19-Christmas holidays begin - Rest at last. Jan. 2-Return to school very reluctantly. Feb. 2-Legislature voted to change the name from State Teachers College to Mississippi Southern College. We felt that it called for some kind of celebration, and promptly voted a half-holiday. Our rejoicing was brought to a rude ending when Mississippi Hall caught on fire. Trunks and clothes were rushed from the building. Girls sitting around with their belongings looked like refugees after a Mississippi River Flood. What a day! Feb. 29-It didn't mean a thing at Mississippi Southern, but it only comes every four years, so I put it down. March 19-Don't exams come around in a hurry! But I can stand it because to- morrow, ----- March 20, after exams are over I can leave for spring holidays. And I have a brand new hat to show off in the Easter parade. March 25-Back to school and Gone With the Wind. I'm going to see it if I have to miss all my meals. April 3-Legislators visited Mississippi Southern. We were all on our very Inst behavior. All of May-Such beautiful weather that I couldn't study or work. Bad case of spring fever. May 31-Good bye to Mississippi Southern. Remark-I notice on reading through my diary that about half of the memor- able dates are the beginning of holidays. But after all. don't we go to school so that we can have holidays? illQllLill5ll 'il ll li li lfbli li ll lllill ll ll lfail llwll ll ll llkw ! l ll llLQllWZlW 3 IWJLWL HWY ll IW!! 090 ll9ll ll ll9!Wll?ll ll?ll9ll ll ll ll, ll ll lil SONNET More wise than he who once, in days of old In far, strange lands where crouching dragons lay, Sought mid the perils great of night and day, l So eagerly, the fabled fleece of gold, In perfect safety in our peacefold fold, Seek we a nobler, Greater treasure, yea, Seek we the wealth whose worth none may gainsay, Increasing knowledge, love, and spirits bold. J WWIWH li il ll ll ll ll ll ll ll lil ll ll IV -E FOOTBALL lf Taking a squad made up almost entirely of junior college transfers after 13 lettermen from the great team of 1938 had been lost through graduation, Coach Reed Green and his capable assistant, Thad Pie Vann, turned out a foot- ball team in 1939 which almost gave State Teachers college an S. I. A. A. championship. The team ended its season with a record of four victories, two defeats and three ties. Only the University of Mississippi, one of the finest teams in the South, and Louisiana Normal, champion of the S. I. A. A., could defeat the Teachers and they turned the trick only after terrific struggles against a team that couldnt have played more inspired ball even had il known it was the last Mississippi State Teachers college football eleven. The Yellowjackets opened their season with a 13-6 conquest of Troy, Ala., State Teachers co-llege here Sept. 29. The stubborn Trop ag- gregation held off all Jacket thrusts during the first quarter but late in the period a 52-yard drive was be-gun which ended on the thrid play of the second quarter with the Teachers' first touchdown of the year, Clower Johnson going over from the two-yard line. Try for point failed so the score was tied a few minutes later when a long Trojan pass put the ball on the State Teachers four-yard line and a thrust at the line took it over. The Yel- lowjackets surged back in the third quarter to score the winning touchdown on a pass from Leo Alessandri to Frenchie Bolis good for 32 yards. Joe Stringfellow kicked the extra point, his first in a string that was destined to reach nine before he missed his last effort of the year. On Oct. 7 the Teachers journied to Hunts- ville, Texas, to battle a great Sam Houston col- lege team to a 7-7 tie. For three periods the teams were scoreless. Then in the fourth quar- ter a Yellowjacket drive carried deep into Sam Houston territory but faitered before reaching pay-dirt. The Texans took over but fumbled on their cwn 15 and Alessandri went over from the five. Sam Houston received and marched to the Teachers' five-yard stripe before a gallant goal-line stand stopped the surge. Alessandri attempted to punt out of danger but the 'kick was blocked and recovered by Sam Houston be- hind the goal line for a touchdown. A success- ful conversion tied the count. One week later the Yellowjackets got back into their old habit of playing scoreless ties with the Millsaps-this one taking place at the state fair in Jackson. It was the fourth 0-0 game played between the two schools in their last five meetings. Each team made one serious scoring treat- the Majors getting' to the Jack-et three-yard line in the first quarter and the Teachers reaching Millsaps' seven in the final period. Statistics favored State Teachers college. Against Delta State Teachers college at Cleveland on Oct. 21 the Yellowjackets really got their offense functioning properly for the first time and the result was a 21-0 rout that was even more decisive than the score indicates. The Jackets marched up and down the field time after time as they rolled up 19 first downs to Delta's one. All scoring came in the second half as Stringfellow passed 25 yards to Bolis for the first touchdown a.nd then scored the second himself on a four-yard end-around. Armand Crity cli- maxezl a 50-yard drive with a short plunge for the third. The Teachers returned to Hattiescurg on Nov. 4 for the annual Homecoming day tilt. de- feating Louisiana college 7-0 in a hard-fought ZBLEK ll it ll IW!! it ll ll ll HV!! ll ll i ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll IWILWL ll ll ---'-E FOGTB LL game. The lone score of the contest came in the second period, Crity driving over from the one-yard line to end a 34-yard drive. Louisiana college was badly outplayed in the first half but came bac'k to make a game out of it in the last two quarters. Before the largest crowd ever to see a game at Faulkner field, the Yellowjackets fell before the University of Mississippi 27-7 on Armistice Day. The Jackets put up a brilliant battle and held the Rebels on even terms in every quarter except the third. Ole Miss tallied mid-way through the second quarter but the little college boys came back with the ensuing kick-off to put on a 63-yard touchdown drive that everybody who saw the contest will always remember. Joe Ovca went over from the 10-yard line after taking a flat pass from Alessandri. Taking advantage of breaks and combining them with their own power the Rebels untied the score with three quick touchdowns in a disastrous third quarter. Undaunted by this first defeat, the Jackets invaded Lafayette, La., on Nov. 18 and hung up their fourth S. I. A. A. victory in as many starts by defeating Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 9-7. Southwestern scored first when Adkins ran Mule Massengales first punt of the game back 70 yards for a touchdown but the Teachers quickly knotted the count as Emmett Sims raced 42 yards to pay-dirt on an end-around play late in the first quarter. In the fourth period S. L. I. stopped. a Jacket drive on its three-yard line but Sims crashed through to block a punt for a safety and the two-point victory margin. State Teachers college, unbeaten in four con- ference starts, and Louisiana Normal, unde- feated in five, met here with the S. I. A. A. championship at stake on Nov. 23 and the De- mons carried the title to Louisiana with a 7-0 victory. The hard-fighting Jackets stopped every De- mon thrust far short of a score until, with five minutes to play, a substitute Normal half-back, Willie Black, got loose on a reverse around his own left end and ran 73 yards for a touchdown. Outside of that one thrust neither team got within the other's 20-yard line. The last game ever to be played by a team from Mississippi State Teachers college was one of the best ever seen at Faulkner field, the Yel- lowjackets battling a heavier St. Mary's Uni- versity eleven from San Antonio, Texas, to a 13-13 tie. A 51-yard drive climaxed by a 13-yard pass from Massengale to Stringfellow gave the Teachers first blood early in the second quar- ter and J. W. Jones recovered a fumble on the St. Mary's 17 to set up another tally a few min- utes la.ter. It was after this score that String- fellow missed his first extra point effort of the year. It proved a costly one as the versatile Rattlers came back to wear the lighter Teach- ers down in the second half and tally twice to tie the score. Ten members of the State Teachers college team of 1939 will not be members of the Missis- sippi Southern eleven of 1940. Being lost by graduation are: Emmett Sims, Glover Freeman and Troy Hendricks, endsg A. D. Sandy Morgan and Thomas Scoop Howard, tacklesg F. J. Dickey, guardg Theo Jones, centerg A. C. Mule Mas- sengale, John Rich, and Leon Brock, backs. Morgan and Massengale each received hon- orable mention on the Associated Press Little All-American team and second team positions on the All-S. I. A. A. team chosen by the same agency. lf ll lialralfaifaiialiet lf if lf li lf lf lf li lfeli ITM lfalfeli 'lieiiieiifeiialfeif travail lielfalfaiielfaifalieifa1fEil??KlfEXllEilfE5liI if .l-, -.. ,,lll.il - .1-.Z BASKETBALL L- The State Teachers College-Mississippi South- ern basketball team lthe school changed names during the middle of the season! chalked up four victories against six defeats in 1940. With only one veteran returning from the 1939 team Coach Reed Green had his work cut out for him but came through remarkably well with a team made up entirely of sopho- mores and juniors. The Yellowjackets opened their season on Jan. 12 at Mobile against Spring Hill, losing a 41-40 decision in a nip-and-tuck game tha.t went one extra period. The Teachers had only a week and a half practice behind them at that time. On the following night the Badgers came to Hattiesburg and fell before the Jackets 35-23. Art Van Tone, sophomore guard, paced the Teachers on both offense and defense. The following week-end Southeastern col- lege of Hammon-d, La., came here for a two- game series and came out on the short end of the score both nights. Friday night the Jackets pulled away in the last four minutes of play to take a 47-39 decision after the lead had changed hands 17 times -during the course of the contest. Halting of a late Southeastern rally gave the Teachers a 41-40 victory the following night. Twice the Yellowjackets built up bi-g leads only to blow them. Joe Ovca was the big noise in the Teachers' attack, tallying 15 points. One week later the Yellowjackets invaded Hammond and split a return series with the Lions, winning the first game 51--43 in one extra period but blowing a good lead in the second to drop a 43-34 decision. On Friday, February 2, the Mississippi legis- lature passed a bill changing the name of this institution from Mississippi State Teachers col- lege to Mississippi Southern college. That afternoon Mississippi Hall caught on fire and that night the scl'1ool's basketball team ran up against one of the best fives in the na- tion, Delta State Teachers college from Cleve- land, and was routed 42-24. Just to show it was no fluke the Deltans rolled over the Yellow- jackets 48-27 the next night. The Mississippi Southern team didn't play another game until Feb. 23 when it invaded Cleveland for two more tiffs with this Delta team which was destined to go to the semi- finals in the National Intercollegiate tourna- ment. The hard-fighting Southerners gave Delta the scare of its life in the first game by leading throughout the first half but superior reserve strength told and the Greenies finally won out 44-33. Although they didn't lead at the end of the first half the next night. the Yellowjackets again put up a close battle and it was only in te last period that Delta ran off with a 56-36 victory. Coach Reed Green isn't losing a ma.n off his squad by graduation this year and Southern should have a great club in 1941. Members of this year's squad were: Howard McCarley, Ira Pete McDowell, J. W. Jones, Art Van Tone, Joe Ovca. Vardaman Lovette. Joe Stringfellow, C. L. Dews, Aaron Prestige and Ed Dever. QlFQN1PQNlFE3Nll6lf ll li lf r li6lF8lF6.iF liAllAll ll li 1550 li lf ll li li if lf 0506!
