NO LONG' ER EXPRESSIVE OF THE COLLEGE LIFE OF TODAY. THIS DEPARTURE HAS TAKEN US UPON UNCERTAIN VENTURES INTO ESTABLISHING SECTIONS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR CLASSES AND NEW FEATURE SECTIONS, WE HAVE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE VIEW SEC- TION PORTRAY THE REAL BEAUTY TO BE FOUND IN OUR BUILDINGS AND OUR SURROUNDINGS. WE OFFER IT NOT AS A MASTERPIECE, FOR WE HAVE NOT AIMED AT THAT, BUT RATHER AS A MIRROR WHEREIN ARE REFLECTED THE JOYS AND FLEETING SORROWS OF YOUR COLLEGE LIFE. IF A PERUSAL OF THIS BOOK CAN TURN TIME BACK, AND MAKE YOU LIVE AGAIN THE RAINBOW DAYS SPENT IN OLD S. T. C., THEN INDEED OUR WORK HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN. u K JK: 53?1:3'3 1 V - .3 ig .--' I v My Wifi: ' ', fag X - , '., H 3.55, X , S ,7a'5'115E51?f:f f-' A f ,L. f - 1T7fvf.i:,.,. 5 'r. Z QGNTENTQ? X Degree Class History HE history of the Class of '26 is very varied. Some of the members were here the day the College opened its doors, and have been getting their ' -T' rl . . . . education by the installment plan. Qthers came directly from the high schools and put in four years of work without interruption. While still others got their taste of S. T. C. during the war and have been here at intervals since. This group of boys and girls came from all sections of the state-some from cities, others from small towns, but the majority have an R. F. D. attached. These boys and girls came to S. T. C. with a purpose in mind-they wanted to do some- thing for their community, their state, and their nation. They were given a hearty welcome and put to work. Later these students found that work is the watchword at S. T. C. and that college life is not all peaches and creaml' but that bumps must be encountered in any undertaking. Most painful of all these bumps were found in the Science's Big Three, Zoo, 'fPhics, and Chem, the Education's Psy, and the English's Compu and Lit. But it was not all rough going. There were many pleasures as well. Our Class contributed to every phase of student life. We had members in all the worthwhile activities, Literary Societies, World Affairs Club, Y. M. C. A., Y. W. C. A., Neka Camon Staff, and the athletic teams. Then a list of activities would not be complete if we failed to mention the most talked of, the much worried about Campus Course so earnestly pursued by some. Now that we are about to end the journey that will give us our long coveted B. S. we are not going to stop but push forward and upward and try to make our efforts at an education a lasting benefit to society. OTIS K. CARTER. 48 ' f x fu v .J -fb 134 - , cf ' f . T. C. This had been my first opportunity to accept Mr. George's 5 annual invitation. A When I arrived at the college, the first person I met was Kathleen Hays. She told me that she is Dean of Gulf-Park College, where Gussie Majure teaches History. She was look- ing for C. L. Milling, Governor of Mississippi, who was the 1925-26 Student government presi- dent. He brought many messages from his Lieutenant Governor, Marvin Taylor, who, of course, was unable to leave Jackson. Kathleen and I then rushed over to the morning session of the Alumni, and there we saw many familiar faces, Mr. Ingram who is the busy State Superintendent of Education had stolen time to spend one day at S. T. C. He told us that he has most efiicient assistants in Mr. Brown, super- visor of high schools, and Mr. Beemon, supervisor of rural schools. Everyone was talking about a book of poems which Leslie' Lou Kirkwood has just published. J. B. VVheeler is President of the VVheeler-jolly Printing Company, although during his senior year he declared that Hgetting out college annuals would not be his life work. We saw many of our former classmates among the faculty. Edna Clower is head of the Geography Department. Mr. Austin is still head of the Science Department, but is so ably assisted by Mattie Boone and Dora McFarland, that-would you believe it-the Zoology course has become the most popular one in school. O. K. Carter is making a very successful head of the History Department. Mr. Hurst has resigned his position in favor of Mrs. T. F. jackson. As has always been the custom, Mr. Cook delivered the address of welcome. This year Mr. E. E. Smith has become Vice-President of the college, and J. P. Mosely has succeded Mr. McClesky as Registrar. Mr. Cook read telegrams from Lula Mae Moore who is teaching Home Economics at M. S. C. VV. and from H. H. Mellard, Sport Editor of the New York Times, in which they expressed their regrets at being unable to attend the meeting, but sent their best wishes to the Alumnae. He also read a letter from Mrs. Hyland, who is Superintendent of Education in Yazoo County. Kathleen called my attention to a recent edition of the jackson Daily News, which contained an account of a famous court trial presided over by judge L. Draughn. In the same edition I read a speech made in the Senate by O. N. Darby. I discovered that M. F. Dickson is editor of the News with Mavis Godbold as his secretary. For the afternoon's entertainment, Mr. George had scheduled a football game between A. 8: M. and Ole Miss. It was a very hotly contested game, as would be expected since Ed VVaites coaches the A. 8: M. team, and R. H. Tucker, the one from Ole Miss. In the evening we attended a banquet which was served under the direction of Esta Dodson, who is now dietitian of S. T. C. At a reception following the banquet Lonnie Mae Downing, Cilla Dyess, Mary Louise Parker, and Gladys jones entertained Kathleen and me and with an account of their recent visit to Europe. Although I am once more busily engaged in teaching Latin, I often find myself thinking again and again of the happy Home Coming Day' of 1935. VVhen I consider the extraordinary success the members of our class have won, I cannot but realize that it is largely due to the training and inspiration we received at S. T. C. H. L. McCleskey and S. C. Hall, who constituted at that time the faculty members of the History, Geography, and Social Science Departments of the Mississippi Normal College, now the State Teachers College. These persons became the faculty advisory council for the Club. Ten students, who had shown an outstanding interest in international affairs, were chosen as a nucleus of the club. Upon a recommendation of the Membership Committee other' students were chosen until a maximum of forty was reached. As far as possible, these members were chosen from the Social Studies group. At present, the membership is limited entirely to students who major or minor in this group. World Affairs Clubs are now under the direction of the Division of Intercourse and Education, a part of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This organization is very helpful to the local clubs in sending material for programs and in occasionally furnishing speakers. The Club meets regularly on the first Monday of each month and renders a public program on the questions of international importance. The programs are prepared and announced in advance, so that the members who are to render the program may have sufficient time to study the subject thoroughly. It has been the policy of the Club to secure during the year one or more prominent lecturers to give addresses on questions of international interest. On such occasions, the meetings are held in Chapel in College Hall and the public is invited to attend. The faculty advisory council for this year consists of Misses Kate Brown, Bernice Day, and VVilla Bolton and Mr. S. C. Hall. The officers for the year are: President, Mr. Truman Lewis, Vice-President, Miss Cilla Dyessg Recording Secretary, Miss Sara Margaret Sams, Corresponding Secretary, Mr. A. H. Blackwell. 82 Safely I 'ou 3 ni 5 fav yu gigs , 4 . .5 llunmxxwaswnuwuxxxmxsxxmxxxxmxxxxmxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I gxxxxxxxxxxmxx wtsxxxxxxxxxmxv-xxxxwxxxvxNXXXKXXXWHXXXXXKXXXXXXWK .. Two leaders were selected and from among those present they chose two groups as in the old- time spelling-bee. Une of these groups became the Prestonian Literary Society, named in memory of the Honorable John R. Preston. Out of that little organization has evolved the pres- ent society. It has produced some of the outstanding orators and debaters of S. T. C., has sent out some of the best school men of the state. The society ever upholds a fine spirit of service and good fellowship and seeks to develop within the individual high ideals of self-sacrifice and courage. It has kept pace with the growth of the college and is today very definitely contributing to the training and preparation of the future teachers of the State of Mississippi. O. N. Unlike little James, the young men who in December of 1912 organized the Pla- tonian Literary Society did not make a mistake when they established the Society for the purpose of training young men in business efficiency, parliamentary law, oratory, organized thinking, and leadership. The Platonian was named for Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher. Each year since, 1912, except the year 1918, the Platonian has continued to play its part in the social and intellectual activities of the State Teachers College, and has moved forward until it has developed into a worth while organization for the advancement of literary culture among its members. That the Society has succeeded is evidenced by the fact that it has shared with its brother society many victories in debate and by the fact that its members are rendering real service to the State of Mississippi. VVith the eflicient oHicers who have served this session and those who are serving now, and the loyal men who compose the Society at this time, this year bids fair to be the banner year for the Platonian. R. D. MCLENDON, Cf'llfFI' Mc was a strapping center of untold strength in snapping the ball into play at the precise time. His steadiness at this position has counted for S. T. C. R. H. TUCKER, Fullbafl' and .-Ilterrzating Cajrtairz Tuck as we know him, is a plunging fullback who hits the line like a lo-ton pile-driver. We cannot overestimate the debt we owe to this sturdy athlete for his splendid work during the foot- ball season of r925. Hi FERRELI., Lefthzzlf, Captain Elect Hi was a veteran player on our team. He was a good gainer on off tackle plays and around the end he was a speed king. His build and speed have been valuable assets to him and to the team, and we suggest that Red Grange take a peek at this man while making his list for the Bears next year. C. L. MILLING, Left End C. L. was a steady worker and a very quick man on defense. Very little did he depend on his tackle to help him get his man. Some of us remember the splendid tackling he did in the home games. joe SHEFFIELD, Quarterback joe's uncanny ability to diagnose the plays of the opposing teams together with his shrewd and remarkable head-work in directing the Teachers, this year has won the respect and admiration of every student. 1 1 6 f+ ts .H U 1 3 uaummmxxuxmwmxxmuxxxxxxwxxxxx xxx x xxxxxxmg gmxxxxxxxxsx xxxxxsxxxxxsxxmxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxvnxnxxxxxnihtb X ...Ma 8 , NEKA CAMON N l , yy .gfrrgd . , K' ag ' lv' N I eg 4-A X , ,w F, J 2.4, . VVe predict for him a place on the varsity next year. NICK JOHNSON, Substitufff Em! Nick hails from Scott countv and is one of our best substitutes. He can plunge a line, and get his man. He is sure to succeed in football. ARTH UR GRAHAM , Ilalfbnrk Though crippled most of the season Jinx exhibited real fighting spirit. Notwithstanding, many bruises, he stood faithfully by his team. Here's hoping that Mitch will be back next fall. I. A. COLLIER, Substitute Guard You might as well try to pass through stone walls as to pass Collier. He showed a remarkable spirit in Hght for the varsity this year. VVe hope to see him back next September. FRED DAVIS, Right Tackle Davis while on the varsity line-up always proved dependable. Here's another L'Hurrah,' left over from the Ole Miss game for his dandy spirit and courage. EDGAR WAI'FES, Left Tackle Ed was one of the main cogs in the Teachers lineup. He was especially adapted to forcing his way through his opponent's lines. KENNETH MCRAE, Center Gaze on the man that snapped the pigskin for S. T. C. in almost every game of the season. Mc was what we called in football a sweet center. ED COOK, Ifztllbaek Ed was not the kid who whipped a wild cat every morning before breakfast but in every game he made his opponents feel that he was that very chap. He was always found in the enemy's ter- ritory, and no one ever knew how but soon found out why he was there! 118 Y p.. Aims was the sort of fellow who had no satisfaction in the game unless he succeeded in getting his man. H. G. BATES, Right Guard The yards gained through Bat's position during the past season were many. Although he is guilty of saying very little, he makes a lasting impression on the opposing backs and linesmen. J. B. WHEELER, Left Guard Jimmy has been a varsity man for a number of years. His picture doesn't tell this, but jimmy is fat and with his weight and long reach it was possible for him to protect his end of the line with ease. O. WAITES, Right End Owl is another veteran on our varsitv team. He has made excellent records this 'ear on the . 3 gridiron. We predict that Owl will make a good coach in the future. A. T. GULLETT12, Right Half By hard work and much thought, Gullette won for himself a regular place on the varsity team. His associates say that he has the necessary qualities for a future grid star. BILL BETHEA, Right End Bethea, whether used as left or right end, was a fast determined player, a fighter of the highest type. This is his first year.
