Washington Semester exposes government workings to students The Washington D.C. Semester is a 16-unit program that provides students with an opportunity to live and study in the nation ' s capital, and to become involved in govern- mental proceedings. The program allows students to become acquainted with the funda- mentals of government by giving them an opportunity to intern in a government agency and attend Con- gressional hearings. They also par- ticipate in field trips throughout the city, and work on special projects. The highlight of the fall program was a 90-minute discussion session with Watergate Judge, John J. Sirica. In addition, the students were given the chance to enjoy the histor- ical and cultural aspects of Washing- ton D.C.

Chinese scientists visit use as part of American tour use was the only institution of higher learning in the California south- land to be visited Tuesday, Oct. 21 by a delegation of highranking scientists from the People ' s Republic of China. The group ' s interests focused on use research in the geological sciences and in petroleum engineering. Official host to the Chinese during their stay was Zohrab Kaprelian, exe- cutive vice-president. He welcomed the party of seven Chinese scientists at a 9 A.m. reception and also hosted them at lunch. A highlight of the visit was a lecture delivered by Liu Ching-Yi, council member of the Chinese Chemical So- ciety. The subject of the address was Some Aspects of Environmental Pro- tection Work in the People ' s Republic of China. That morning the Chinese met with T.F. Yen, associate professor of chem- ical engineering, who delivered a pre- sentation on the bioleaching of oil. Petroleum Engineering faculty also shared in a discussion of reservoir en- gineering and oil recovery research as well as compaction sediments and geothermal reservoirs. Ta-liang Teng, associate professor of geological sciences at USC, hosted a visit by the Chinese to USC ' s Geo- physical Laboratory and discussed the universities ' work in microearthquake monitoring and research. Earlier, there was a short field trip to Baldwin Hills to examine the site of a dam failure and to inspect USC seismic monitoring stations maintained in that location. The group of scientists was part of a larger party that spent a month in the United States. Their U.S. -educated chairman. Professor Chou Pei-yuan, is China ' s foremost figure in international science.
