The College of Continuing Edu- cation was headed by an interim dean, Harvey Stedman, formerly the col- lege ' s executive director, while the search for a permanent dean continued. There were also new faces among the university ' s trustees, including that of a prominent black woman, Yvonne Braithwaite Burke. She is an alumna of the use Law Center and a Democratic congresswoman from the Los Angeles area. Also joining the university ' s govern- ing board were three corporate execu- tives: Edward Carlson of United Air- lines: Carl Hartnack of Security Pacific National Bank: and Gordon Hough of Pacific Telephone. The activities of the university ad- ministrators are removed from the life of the average student, despite the great effect those individuals have on the quality of education at USC.
