Quincy Jones, a prominent Southern California architect, was appointed dean of the School of Architecture and Fine Arts. uate studies (John Cantelon) and aca- demics (Paul Hadley on an interim basis) and specifically excluded those positions from its diagram of the proposed administrative restructuring. Hubbard was less explicit than the task force in his appraisal of the search for a provost. While making it clear that he was seeking a person of un- questioned intellectual quality and accomplishment and so recognized throughout the scholarly community, the president evaded the inevitable question: what about those vice-presi- dents ' ? I cannot at this time delineate a chart of function and organization (en- compassing the new provost), Hub- bard said. It would be presumptuous of me to do so, for if we find the per- son we are seeking, he will most surely demand that his input in this regard be considered. So the implications of the adminis- trative revamping were yet to become fully apparent. There were other changes in the aca- demic administration of the university in 1975-76 not related to the Cope Re- port and its implementation. New deans and directors were named in several academic units and four new trustees were appointed. Edward Bassett, former dean of the William Allen White School of Jour- nalism at the University of Kansas, came to USC as director of the School of Journalism after a prolonged search. Kenneth Owler Smith, who had served as interim director for the previous year, was named associate director of the school. Houston Flournoy, having com- pleted his tasks in advising President Hubbard on the administrative reor- ganization, was named dean of the newly instituted Center for Public Affairs. He was named to the posi- tion shortly after announcing he would not be a candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate this year. School of Dentistry and Jack Steele be- came dean of the School of Business Administration. The College of Continuing Edu- cation was headed by an interim dean, Harvey Stedman, formerly the col- lege ' s executive director, while the search for a permanent dean continued. There were also new faces among the university ' s trustees, including that of a prominent black woman, Yvonne Braithwaite Burke. She is an alumna of the use Law Center and a Democratic congresswoman from the Los Angeles area. Also joining the university ' s govern- ing board were three corporate execu- tives: Edward Carlson of United Air- lines: Carl Hartnack of Security Pacific National Bank: and Gordon Hough of Pacific Telephone. The activities of the university ad- ministrators are removed from the life of the average student, despite the great effect those individuals have on the quality of education at USC. Fur- ther changes will undoubtedly be made as the university continues in its avowed quest for intellectual excel- lence. One thing is certain: the university has proved it can move rapidly to in- stitute changes of substance, if not form, when it wants to. Whether the same energy can be channeled into finding solutions for the other prob- lems facing the university is, for now, an unanswered question.
