Hubbard was less explicit than the task force in his appraisal of the search for a provost. While making it clear that he was seeking a person of un- questioned intellectual quality and accomplishment and so recognized throughout the scholarly community, the president evaded the inevitable question: what about those vice-presi- dents ' ? I cannot at this time delineate a chart of function and organization (en- compassing the new provost), Hub- bard said. It would be presumptuous of me to do so, for if we find the per- son we are seeking, he will most surely demand that his input in this regard be considered.
