Varsity Footlba W lien (.loach Harry Gamage took stock of the University ' s football pros pects last fall, he counted nineteen lettermen from the 1936 squad which had placed second in the North Central Conference, and nine freshmen numeral winners. Confronting this aggregation was a grueling ten-game schedule. That the supply of veterans would not be superfluous was appar- ent at the outset, for the three strongest opponents — North Dakota. Mar- quette, and St. Louis — were all to be encountered before mid-season, and consequently little time was available for experimenting with new men. SOUTH DAKOTA 46. HUENA VISTA 7 The Kedshirts gave an eve-opening demonstration of potential power when they breezed to victory over Buena Vista College in the initial game. Besides opening wide holes for their ball-carriers, the first string Coyote line was almost invulnerable on defense, the visitors ' lone touchdown com- ing while the U reserves were on the field. SOUTH DAKOTA 25. WAYNE 7 Three injured regulars watched from the bench as the South Dakota eleven played in-and-out ball to outclass the Wayne. Nebraska Teachers. The team seemed to lack the precision of their previous performance, and were able to make only one concerted drive for a touchdown. Blocked punts paved the wav for two scores, while Ernie Gunderson. on an end- around play, arched a forty-five yard pass to Ryan for the other. Wayne tallied on an eighty-eight yard return of a kick-off. Otherwise their attack netted only a pair of first downs. In this tilt Gunderson continued his alert play at the left wing post, Batlt.m. Late in the half North Dakota ' s famed Fritz Pollard sprinted around end for forty-two yards and the tying touchdown. Then, in the third quarter. Horace Johnson slipped inside his own left flank for a twenty-nine yard gain, and line plunges cov- ered the remaining eleven yards to the touchdown which eventually proved the margin of another odak title.
