We live with comforts and pleasures still unkown in many parts of the world. But let us not become so complacent in our lives that we lose sight of our humble beginnings. And let us not forget the thousands of people who gave their lives, so that we might preserve our heritage and traditions. We, the staff of The Carolana 1975-76, together with students, faculty, administration and staff of the Univer- sity of South Carolina at Spartanburg salute generations past who were brave, enduring, ever patient, and helped bring us this far. We pledge to carry on in that great tradition. 14 15 ADMINISTRATION USC-S Director Dr. Olin B. Sansbury At kft: Glenn Sprmgs 17 Dr. Olin B. Bachelor General Studies The school year 1975-76 saw USC-Spartanburg graduate its first senior class. Although the class was small, it represented a wide cross section of the entire student body. The addition of more senior level courses promised larger senior classes in the future. But to the Senior Class of 1975-76, this was a milestone year. 1976 marked not only the year of the Bicentennial, but also a new era for USC-S. 49 f? - ..if« gC • ,1 ?, 1 .-1 . ■r -H m $ « ' ' % ' v • '  ' J Caprice Alexander Chuck Allen John Allen Robert Allen Doris Anderson Mark E. The main objective of the Student Government Association this year has been to help improve our relationships between the students, faculty, and the community. Students have enjoyed a variety of activities sponsored by the SGA and have had the opportunity to make suggestions as to other types of activities they would like to see offered by the S.G. A. Included in this year ' s programming were parties, fall sports day, a concert, homecoming, and Miss uses. Throughout the year we have worked to improve relations with the faculty by helping them to have a better understanding of the SGA. A drop-in luncheon was given in January for the faculty in appreciation of the fine work they are doing for the students on our campus. The Community Liaison Committee has participated in projects at the Spartanburg Girls Home and the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind. Along with the projects the SGA sponsored a float in the Spartanburg Christmas Parade. In general, this has been a very good year for the SGA. Now that we area four year campus, dedicated and experienced SGA members will be more prepared to form the nucleus of the SGA in the future. The meeting seemed to always start and end late. itt. m 104 Despite what you may be thinking, Maggie ' s Drawers has nothing to do with Ungerie. More correctly it signifies a com- plete miss of the target on the rifle range. This is our own unique literary publica- tion, containing literary and artistic selec- tions by USC-S students. 105 CAROLANA 1975-76 The Carolana Staff for the year 1975-76 increased to over twenty-three members. Also the Carolana Annual increased greatly in size and in color pages. With the rush to meet deadlines, and not meeting deadlines, we still found time for fun and laughter, as these pages show. ART LEAGUE The function of the Art League is to explore the depths of the world of art and to further the understanding of art USC-S. The League was organized in September of 1975 with Katie Hicks as advisor. An art exhibit of graphic works was held in September. The league also worked to boast school spirit. Rob- bie Rifle , a life size basketball player, was used to announce all home basketball games. The windows at the Hodge Center were painted with the twelve days of Christmas to express and create the spirit of Christmas. The league put into operation a silk-screen printing process that well served the campus. Other activities were: parties, painting back drops for the Drama Club, designing basketball program covers, and con- tributing to Maggie ' s Drawers. Trips were made to several museums and art departments in Greenville, Spartanburg, Col- umbia, and Atlanta. •pt Officers zcere the following: First Row, Renne Smith, President. It has sponsored eight skeet shoots and three rifle shoots during 1975 and 1976. One of the primary purposes of the club was to teach beginning shooters safe, correct procedures and responsibility in handling firearms. Approxi- mately twelve totally inexperienced persons have been introduced to firearms in such an atmos- phere, while a total of over fifty people have be- come more acquainted with shooting as a group activity. With the exception of strict emphasis on safety, the club ' s activities, are conducted in an informal, relaxed manner. Any USC-S student, faculty, or staff member is welcome to join the club. The only requirements are a responsible attitude and a willingness to learn and comply with proper gun safety rules. Since the organization ' s inception in the fall of 1973, the VSL has accomplished its objectives by playing an active role in community and school projects. Last year the Veteran Student League sold movie tickets, participated in the Goodfellow s Christmas Project, sponsored a school dance for the student body; a picnic for the retarded citizens at Whitten Village, and manned a Veteran ' s Information Table during regis- tration. The VSL has also worked with the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. During the 1975-76 school year, the Veteran Student League had on its Accomplish- ment List the following: two school parties, continued support for the Goodfellows Christmas Project, and two visits to Whitten Village — one in the fall and another in the spring. Although veteran oriented, the VSL is open to all students at USC-Spartanburg, and looks forward to the next school year with the support of its members and other interested parties. WOMEN ' S VOLLEYBALL TEAM The USC-S Lady Rifles Volleyball team closed their disheartening season of 0-16 with a glimmer of hope as they took a game from Benedict College in the SCAIAW State Volleyball Tournament, held November 14-15 at Francis Marion College with twelve participating teams. Benedict College, like USC-S, fielded its first women ' s varsity volleyball team this year. The tourney winner was College of Charleston, winning eight consecutive games over the two day period, with Winthrop College taking second place honors. Participants this season for the Lady Rifles were Janice Allen, Beth Burgess, Beth Rogers, Pam Howard, Christana McKissick, Debby Smith, Vickie Plazico, Kim Maybury, Cathy Simmons, and LuAnn Cleary. Each of these girls has three years of remaining eligibility, and the team expects improvement with experi- ence, as this was their first exposure to competitive power volleyball. We hope that we can encourage more young women to participate in athletic activities at USC-S. Being a commuter college with no dormitory accommoda- tions, it is easy for students not to be involved in college life. College athletics deserves your consideration because they add dimension to the academic aspect of college and sets a precedent for active life styles. S:,SC s C-s s i-Li s i 2 Left to Right. This season was highligh- ted by victories over most of the NAIA District 6 teams played. A strong showing in the South Carolina Invitational at Hampton climaxed the season. In the Fall 1975 season USC- Spartanburg fielded its strongest team ever. With four freshman al- ternating at starts with three re- turning lettermen, the team started slowly with an eighth place finish in the Lander Invitational and a ninth place finish in the Etowah Valley Invitational. After winning two dual meets the Rifles managed a very prestigious tenth place finish in the Furman Four Ball Tournament, finishing ahead of all teams except major NCAA schools from SEC, ACC and Southern Con- ference. EPILOGUE Once upon a time, long ago and far away, the staff of Carolana 1975-76 had a dream that we could publish a book. Many times during the past year we thought we would never realize our dream. But still with all the delays, fights and never having enough pictures, our dream finally became reality. It is our hope for you — the administration, faculty, staff, and students of USC-SPARTANBURG — that we have fulfilled this dream, and given you a book, not for a year, but one that will last for a lifetime.
