L- ------W -- ,Ma rf -A -1- - University Ceremony and the Mace The Mace is a symbolic object, representing in this in- stance the corporate entity and combined endeavors of the whole university community. Though adopted one hundred and sixty-six years after the University's founding, its im- port is timeless for it signifies equally the institutions past, present and future. Members of the Board of Trustees, stu- dents, alumni, faculty, administrative personnel-indeed ev- eryone whose good will and and service has contributed to the University's well-being, may see in the Mace concrete expression of their respect and affection for the institution. The Mace is present on occasions of outstanding impor- tance in the life of the University, such as degree-granting ceremonies. Placing the Mace on its stand is a signal that the proceedings are about to come to order, its retirement indicates that the exercises have been concluded. Because of what it symbolizes, the Mace will be carried at Carolina in a separate special procession by a Mace- bearer, appointed by the President. President jones, after consultation with the Board of Trustees, has delegated the honor of bearing the Mace to the President of the Student Body. Since the Mace, as previously noted, represents the total university community, the Mace-bearer is escorted by a member of the Faculty-in-Course CSecretary of the Fac- ultyj, of the Faculty Emeriti, of the Alumni fPresident of the Alumni Associationj, and of the Board of Tmstees. The Making of a Mace The Mace for The University of South Carolina was made by the distinguished silversmith and macemaker, Leslie Durbin of London, England. . . . Mr. Durbinis own brief description of the University's Mace may be of some interest. The head is made up of three concave doubleheaded hatchet shape wings which spring from a circular column. In the centers of t ese are mounted the seals of the Uni- versity of South Carolina and of the State of South Caroli- na, and the Great Seal of the United States. These are gilt, c'Above and below this group are two centrally mounted shallow conical platforms. Arising from the top one is the State Tree, the foliage of which is stylistically rendered by a group of thirteen five-pointed stars. This is also gilded. On the lower platform appears the University's device 'Faithful Index to the Ambitions and Fortunes of the State., The shaft, smooth and tapering, is decorated with eight Union Starso and jessamine flowers and terminated by a flaring handle or base with the initials S.R.C. 1870-1955 inset in silver gilt.
