CENTER tinued as such until the lall ol T960 when it became an integral part ol the University system. The Col- lege was renamed as the University ol South Carolina Coastal Carolina Center. The residents ol I-lorry County have twice shown their willingness to sacritice lor the college. Eirst, they added a new tax to an already heavy tax load. Second, they showed all ol South Carolina that they could pool their donations and raise S300,000 to get the new campus started. The Coastal Carolina Center is at present the guest ol the Conway I-Iigh School. Ottices are maintained in this building, and the lacilities ol the high school are at the Centeris disposal alter 3:00 p. m. In addi- tion, lor the school year of I96Q-63, Coastal Carolina has had an extra classroom lor its use throughout the day so that morning classes could be scheduled. A beautiful new building is presently taking shape on the I28-acre campus between Myrtle Beach and Conway. This building will be ready lor occupancy HIGHER EDUCATION COMMISSION lor the lall registration ol I963. Vfith confoetio the new building Coastal Carolina Center if ce granted broad expansion in its total program ffacy courses ol study are to tind multiple advantage through lacilities attorded in a structure designed to meet the need. Added subjects in science ll- ce- come a part ol the curriculum with the new iacor tories made available and many activities pointe beyond the immediate student body will be inaugu- rated. Students and community participants aiiice will tind a wealth ol advantage in the opportuntes presented with the new building. Every phase ol the Center'slile will be strengthened and made more lruitlul in community relations. Cul tural activities will bring lyceum atmosphere, ano adult evening programs are to be made availao e. To this end they enlisted the help of their own public school otticials, secured the sponsorship ol the College of Charleston, and solicited their fellow citizens for ti- nancial support. The Coastal Carolina Junior College opened September 20, 1954, with an initial enroll- ment of tilty-three students. From September, 1954, through June of 1958, the Coastal Carolina Junior College was an ott-campus branch of the College ol Charleston. During this period a thriving summer school was established which rivaled the regular session in registrants and enthusiasm. The summer school otterings were de- signed primarily lor the teachers ol the public school system. Resident Director Florence Center Stolces l-lall-Administration and Classroom Building llront viewl. 1 J y . ,ks ZW .4 FLORENCE The Florence Center stands as a monument to the public-spirited citizens ol the Pee Dee area who in 1957 approached the University with a request that university-level training be made available to resi- dents ol the eastern section ol South Carolina within a reasonable commuting distance ol their homes. So convinced ol the need lor such a facility were these emissaries that they had obtained authoriza- tion to supply temporary quarters and to underwrite operational expenses with county lunds until a state appropriation could be made available. As a careful investigation indicated that such a need did exist, the University placed its stamp ol approval on a residence-credit freshman program dittering in no way lrom that on main campus and opened its doors to 52 young people on September lo, l957. The success ol this initial year was so great that in September ol i958 a sophomore year was added with a resultant increase in enrollment to l l3 students.
