COMMANDER F. L. McGEACHY, USN Commander McGEACHY, who is completing his first year as the Unit Executive Officer, began his naval career in 1946 when he enlisted in the Navy. He later entered the United States NavaI Academy via fleet competitive appointment where he received his commission upon graduation in 1951. Some of the commander's previous assignments include posi- tions as the AiMship Readiness and Readiness Reporting Offi- cer on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor; Assistant Operations Officer on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Air Basic Training; Officer-in-Charge of Com- posite Squadron Five W051 at NAS Cubi Point in the Republic of the Philippine Islands; Flight Leader in Training Squadron One, NAAS Whiting Field; and Maintenance Officer in Attack Squadron Sixty Five tVA-651. Commander McGEACHY has served on several of the attack air craft carriers and is currently the only aviator on the NROTC Staff. Along with his administrative duties, he serves as adviser and coordinator for the Flight ln- doctrination Program and also as advisor to the Mermaid Fleet. The Commander and his wife, Pamela were married in 1954 in Coronado, California and now reside in Columbia with their five children, three girls and two boys. MAJOR WALTER G. SMITH, JR., USMC Maior Smith was commissioned as a second lieutenant in June, 1958, after the Officer Candidate Course at Quantico, Virginia. After ini- tial assignment for training at the Basic School and Artillery Offi- cer's Orientation Course at Quanticd, he joined the 10th Marine Regi- ment, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Leieune, North Carolina and served with that organization until April, 1962. Maior Smith's assignments have included Commanding Officer, 4.2 inch Mortar Battery, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines; Executive Officer, Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida; and Commanding Officer, 1st 8 inch Howitzer Battery. He attended Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia from September, 1966 to February 1967. During his most recent assignrrient to the 3rd Marine Division, MaiorSmith participated in operations in the Northern I Corps area of the Repub- lic of South Vietnam. He arrived at the University of South Carolina in June, 1968. Maior Smith is a graduate of Davidson College. V LIEUTENANT DONALD W. PARKER, USN Lieutenant Parker, the Unit Sophomore instructor and advi- sor is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University where he received a B 5 degree in Accounting. He entered the Navy through the Aviation Officer Candidate Program and was commissioned in November 1963. Subsequent duty assign- ments have included VT-10, AEwwECM Evaluator training, Airborne Early Warning Barrier Squadron Pacific, Naval Reconnaissance and Technical Support Center, and the USS KITTY HAWK as Hangar Deck Officer.

i THE COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN JOHN H. FITZGEREL, USN This year the University of South Carolina NPOTC Unit welcomed Captain John H. FITZGEREL as its new Com- manding Officer. Captain FITZGEREL comes to the Unit from his last tour as executive director of the Navy Department Of LegiSv iative Affairs. Prior duty stations include the Chief of Staff, Naval Support Activity, Danong, Republic of South Vietnam and Commanding Officer of the destroyer USS VOGELESANG. Other recent assignments were as Strategic Operations Officer, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as a Congressional liaison officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. During his career which began in July, 1942, Captain FITZGEREL has served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam conflict. Captain FITZGEREL received his baccalaureate degree from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania and a master's degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College Senior Course. Captain FITZGEREL and his wife Jessanne have four children. Their son, Hill, is a senior at George Washington University. Their eldest daughter, Nancy, is presently a sophomore at USC and daughters Betsy and Carol reside with their parents in Columbia. The NROTC Battaltion and the entire Carolina Community are looking forward to the continued dynamic leadership and personal involvement of Captain FITZGEREL in the coming year.

LIEUTENANT JEFFERY LYNN BROWN, USN Lieutenant BROWN is the Unit's senior instructor and advi- sor. He was a member of the NROTC Unit here at South Carolina from 1960 to 1964. After commissioning in 1964 he was ordered to active duty aboard USS MEREDlTH via Nuclear Weapons SchooI and Gunnery School. While on board MEREDITH he served as Gunnery Assistant and Fire Con- trol Officer, First Lieutenant Navigator, and Ship's Secre- tary. His next duty was on board USS WILLIAM V. PRATT where he served as Gunnery Officer. Upon promotion to lieutenant in December of 1967 he was ordered to duty as Executive Officer of USS ALACRITY after attending four weeks of Surface Mine Warfare School. Lieutenant BROWN came to the Unit in September, 1969 from a four week Wea- pons System Seminar at the United States Naval Academy. LIEUTENANT KIRBY E. HUGHES, USN Lieutenant Hughes received his commission in the Navy in June of 1966 upon graduation from the U. S. Naval Academy, He then attended Naval Flight School and subsequently received his Naval Flight Officer wings in March, 1967. Lt. Hughes was then assigned to Heavy Photography Squad 62 in Jacksonville, Florida. Later, Lieutenant Hughes was stationed in Danang, Republic of South Vietnam where he was awarded three Air Medals for night interdiction flights over North Vietnam. Lieutenant Hughes then came to the Unit at Carolina to assume the duties of freshmen instruc- tor and advisor. LIEUTENANT JAMES P. WOERNER, JR., USN Lieutenant WOERNER was commissioned in 1966 upon grad- uation from the University of Nebraska which he attended as a Regular NROTC student. After receiving a Fulbright Scholarship he studied for one year at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. In June 051967 LT.WOER - NER reported to the USS GLENNON tDD8401 where he served in the Operations Department. He entered the Naval Amphib- ious Intelligence School in Coronado, California in Feb- ruary, 1969 and later that year reported to Commander Naval Forces, Republic of South Vietnam. He spent twelve months in Vietnam where he was associated with both Operation Seatloat and Operation Giant Slingshot . LT. WOERNER was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service in Vietnam. LT. WOERNER left Vietnam in June, 1970 and attended a summer NROTC Seminar at Purdue University prior to reporting to Carolina to assume the duties of J unior Instructor and Advisor.
