LIEUTENANT JEFFERY LYNN BROWN, USN Lieutenant BROWN is the Unit's senior instructor and advi- sor. He was a member of the NROTC Unit here at South Carolina from 1960 to 1964. After commissioning in 1964 he was ordered to active duty aboard USS MEREDlTH via Nuclear Weapons SchooI and Gunnery School. While on board MEREDITH he served as Gunnery Assistant and Fire Con- trol Officer, First Lieutenant Navigator, and Ship's Secre- tary. His next duty was on board USS WILLIAM V. PRATT where he served as Gunnery Officer. Upon promotion to lieutenant in December of 1967 he was ordered to duty as Executive Officer of USS ALACRITY after attending four weeks of Surface Mine Warfare School. Lieutenant BROWN came to the Unit in September, 1969 from a four week Wea- pons System Seminar at the United States Naval Academy. LIEUTENANT KIRBY E. HUGHES, USN Lieutenant Hughes received his commission in the Navy in June of 1966 upon graduation from the U. S. Naval Academy, He then attended Naval Flight School and subsequently received his Naval Flight Officer wings in March, 1967. Lt. Hughes was then assigned to Heavy Photography Squad 62 in Jacksonville, Florida. Later, Lieutenant Hughes was stationed in Danang, Republic of South Vietnam where he was awarded three Air Medals for night interdiction flights over North Vietnam. Lieutenant Hughes then came to the Unit at Carolina to assume the duties of freshmen instruc- tor and advisor. LIEUTENANT JAMES P. WOERNER, JR., USN Lieutenant WOERNER was commissioned in 1966 upon grad- uation from the University of Nebraska which he attended as a Regular NROTC student. After receiving a Fulbright Scholarship he studied for one year at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. In June 051967 LT.WOER - NER reported to the USS GLENNON tDD8401 where he served in the Operations Department. He entered the Naval Amphib- ious Intelligence School in Coronado, California in Feb- ruary, 1969 and later that year reported to Commander Naval Forces, Republic of South Vietnam. He spent twelve months in Vietnam where he was associated with both Operation Seatloat and Operation Giant Slingshot . LT. WOERNER was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service in Vietnam. LT. WOERNER left Vietnam in June, 1970 and attended a summer NROTC Seminar at Purdue University prior to reporting to Carolina to assume the duties of J unior Instructor and Advisor.
