ofzewofzci HIS year the people of Saskatchewan celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the formation of the Province. Such an occasion is one for rejoicing. But amid the rejoicing it is very fitting that we re- member the men and women, the pioneers, who with faith and by hardihood laid the foundation for our present-day society. As Abram Joseph Ryan wrote a land without memories is a land without history. The memories of this land are not the tortured and stained memories of violent and bloody years but rather they are the memories of hard- ship faced and overcome. of new and successful experiments in living together, of stern challenges and real achievements. The pioneers dedicated their plans and their toil to the future of their sons and daughters. In celebrating our Golden Jubilee we honour these pioneersg we give thanks for the bounties of the past, and we ask guidance for the future. The University of Saskatchewan is very much a part of the provincial scene. It is in the broad sense a university of the people. Our university was built on faith and maintained in the belief that knowledge and freedom are essential to the full develop- ment of man. We are part of its great traditions. It is your responsibility, as it is mine, to maintain the ideals on which it was founded. As you celebrate the Golden jubilee of our Province with prayers and with rejoicing, each of you will stir to a special memory. The spirit of these grey stone walls will invoke some responsive chord, dedicating part of your life today to the stirring world of tomorrow. A , Premier of Saskatchewan
