It's hard to try and relate what one has experienced here in four years. It's hard to put into words how difficult keeping a year’s time can be. It’s hard. also, to adequately say thank-you to the staff, and to say good-bye to friends. But all final things must be done, just as the beginning things are. and I shall do them. First of all. thank-you Marie. Kathy. Elizabeth. Pat. Bob and Mike for all you have been and done. I don’t know how else to say it. Thank-you. It's too bad that the people who look at this won't know how much effort and time it takes to make a yearbook. Secondly. I hope all those people who have bought this book in order to remember enjoy it. To these people I say: look at it sometimes; get people to sign it; remember. Finally. I would like to thank all those people who have made these days here happier ones — I would like to thank them for their friendship. And. regretably. an inevitable goodbye to the Class of 1973.1 knew it well. All yearbooks must have a staff. This one is no exception. The 'staff of most yearbooks is usually an aggregate of a division of labor. Heading the divisional columns are the editors. below whom are listed the help. This volume is different, however. There was only a small group of people called staff, who did many varied and sundry jobs. These tasks so effectively spanned the divisionary columns that each person could effectively be put into each column. Thus, it was decided to have a list of staff only. The people below are responsible for the book. They worked hard. If the book has errors (and it does), then it is because to err is human. The staff: Co-editors: Malcolm Owens, technical advice. Patrick O'Connor, business manager. Staff: Marie Liberatore Kathy Gee Elizabeth M. Hayes Patricia Jin Robert Yuan Michael Robinson Also to be acknowledged are the contributions of Michele Giordani. They also arrange for tournaments to be held here, thus attracting thousands of top-grade high-schoolers as potential USF students. Under their Director of Forensics. Fr. James Dempsey. S.J.. the Philhistorians also hold bilingual tournaments for visiting debaters, as well as organize a High School Forensics Institute during Summer Session. Highlight of the past year was their outstanding success at the Fresno Raisin Center Tournament. They were judged the best school to participate and swept all the first prizes except one. Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta Sigma Upsilion is the USF chapter of PHI ALPHA THETA, the international honor society in History. Organized in 1921. Phi Alpha Theta is composed of students and professors who have been elected to membership on the basis of excellence in the study or writing of history. A minimum of twelve units in history with a B average is required of undergraduate students, so history majors are not the only ones eligible for membership. At the same time. Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society. Its objective is the promotion of historical study by the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and thought among historians. Sigma Upsilon encourages its members in research and publication with the help of the parent organization through scholarships, awards and publications. Some of the members attended this year’s Regional Conference at Santa Clara, and are now looking forward to the biennial Phi Alpha Theta Conference to be held in San Francisco this December. The USF chapter has also brought together students, teachers and writers of history, both intellectually and socially, with a series of Dinner Meetings. Sigma Upsilon also works with the USF Historical Society on a number of projects. 52 Rifle Team FRONT ROW: William Romano. Paul Beacon. E.Roland. STANDING: Friederich Martin. John Caitmon. Don hoopsters rolled to a decisive 12-2 record to capture their second consecutive WCAC title, to show once again that basketball is here to stay at U.S.F. With an overall 23-5 record, their best since the 1965-66 season. U.S.F. advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive year. In the opener, coach Bob Gaillard's nineteenth-ranked Dons ran into third-ranked Long Beach State University, with all of the oddsmakers predicting that once again Long Beach would eliminate U.S.F. from the tourney. The Dons proceeded to shock everyone but themselves and the faithful few at U.S.F. by handing Long Beach a crushing defeat. 77-67. This win earned the Dons a second try at defeating those notorious fellows of the University of California. Los Angeles, who had humiliated them earlier in the season. Throughout the first half of this rematch.” the Dons once again confounded the odds-makers by staying within one point of the lead. Unfortunately. U.C.L.A. went on to win the contest. 54-39. 74 75 76 The 1972-73 Dons were led by senior guard Michael Quick, who commanded a highly respectable 17.9 average. His runningmate was all WCAC junior guard forward Phil Smith, who led the team in scoring with a 20.9 average. At one corner was senior Snake'' Jones, with a 10.6 average, and a 9.7 rebounding average. Playing at the other corner was all WCAC junior forward Kevin Restani. who averaged 18.7 points per game, while pulling rebounds from the boards to the tune of 12.4 per game. Finally, choking up the middle was sophomore sensation Eric Fernsten. who averaged 10.2 points per game, as well as keeping an average of 9.9 rebounds per contest. 77 78 79 STANDING (L-R): Ken Harris. 8rad Quanstrom.
