The main innovative element is the faculty, with their attempts to combine a high quality of undergraduate teaching with a variety of research aspects. Aside from the school of nursing, this is the only department chaired by a woman. Millianne Granberg. This in itself shows a break with the past of male domination of higher education. The math department, being traditional and “graduate-school oriented.” applies innovation in ways like these: using a textbook authored by two of the department members, inviting student input into the subject through individual suggestion, and the involvement of their two academic council representatives in department matters.
