Its purpose is to provide some slight material link between the men of our class and our University, to serve perhaps in later years to recall memories of our years together on Ignatian Heights and our mutual quest for Christian knowledge, to bring back to mind companions we perchance may never meet again. This is a nostalgic occasion, and if this thin volume serves in some small way to hold our minds and our hearts closer to alma mater and to each other in the years now coming our fullest hopes will be rewarded. THE EDITORS. DEDICATION TO THE MEN of alma mater, who have passed through the same portals we are this year passing through, and who are now serving their country in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, and whose example we will soon follow, this book is gratefully dedicated. JOURNAL OF A JOURNEY 1938-1942 IT was a foggy morning, the twenty-second of August, 1938, when the Class of 'Forty-two arrived on the windswept Hilltop to become the eighty-third class to begin their journey through the portals of alma mater. Four brief years ago— the quadrangle behind the college building was a treacherous rocky clearing, a muddy quagmire after only the slightest rain; the ROTC drilled on the football field and on Golden Gate Avenue—where the Parade Ground now is, was only weed-cluttered waste, strewn with refuse and broken tombstones which littered the campus even where the beautiful gardens are today; an attempt had been made on the new field at Masonic Avenue, but the clearing looked woefully overgrown and the slope from the Loyola Lodge to the field was impassable with weeds and boulders; where the Senior Patio is now, lay the ruins of a Model T Ford in the shadow of dead Eucalyptus trees. Such was the University when the Class of 'Forty-two arrived! And it was a tumultuous arrival at that, with Frosh-Soph hostilities breaking out almost immediately. Remember Union Square, and the Lowell High schoolyard, and Market Street in front of the Emporium (when the rescuing cry of This way, '42 reversed an initiation into one for the sophs), the Frosh Roundup electing Jim Herning and Charley White brawl captains, Mai McCarthy and George Plato, class cheer leaders? Remember meeting in front of the High School and marching to the eight o'clock class in a defiant body, and the parade en masse to Haight Street for lunch. There was a unity gained in that first week that '42 has never lost. August 31, and The Brawl, that now extinct climax to Freshman-Sophomore hostilities—'Forty-two triumphant, 4Vfe-l, winning the tug-of-war, the sack-rush, the ball-rush, and sending Tom Rovere up the greased pole in the final flag rush. Green paint, rotten eggs and tomato spray—a day that will be long remembered, as well as the Freshman Reception that night, the barn dance that saw '42 and '41 meet on friendly terms and discard their freshman beanies. Perhaps, someday ... Quartermasters??? Personal Service Queen of the Campus Over the Rail Wire loose. Mac?' Tickets to the Picnic Jim Herning was president that freshman year, Mai McCarthy, vice-president. Bob Rossi, secretary, and Bill Campbell and Don Helbig, class representatives on the Executive Committee. 'Forty-two had a Freshman football team of fair renown, that first year, which, with little Pete Franceschi running wild, beat San Francisco J. C., Saint Mary's, San Jose, and lost to Santa Clara and California Poly. Tiger Smith, Tom Canepa, Russ Kynoch, and George Burtner were others on that outfit. There was a Freshman basketball team, led by Will Debrunner, Jim Porter, and Charley White, which lost only one game in its regular season, and Pete Franceschi climaxed a successful athletic year by winning the annual President's Day Pentathlon, an event '42 has monopolized since its arrival on the hill. Saint Patrick's Day, and Prexy Herning leads his cohorts on the tortuous, mysterious road to Oak Knoll Country Club in the East Bay, for the Freshman Fandango. 'Forty-two danced the evening 'round to the music of Larry Cannon, although some of the class is reportedly still lost in the maze of the Oakland hills. Sophomore year rolled around, and '42 took up its task of initiating another crop of freshmen to the 'finer things' of college life. There was Union Square, the Emporium entrance, the reservoir, and Pippo Scandurra's whirling dump truck the night of the Frosh Roundup. The Brawl came around, and a badly outnumbered group of sophs raised brain over brawn to triumph for '42, 3-2, scoring in the sack race, the tug-of-war, and the horseback duel. A1 Larkins, now at Annapolis, was president that year. George Whelan and Phil Kearney shared duties as vice-president. Bob Rossi was secretary-treasurer, while Bob McCarthy and Mai McCarthy served as class representatives. Down memory lane . . . October 14 . . . U. S. F. George Whelan took the Luckman that year, and the Sullivan the next. O'Meara took both the Luckman and the McKinley Debate in 1941, Bob McCarthy winning as an orator and Ed Boessenecker as a debater in the senior year. April 9 saw Cyrano de Bergerac produced by the College Players. Sophomores Jim Herning and George Whelan played the second leads to alumnus Bill Ferdon's Cyrano. President's Day came on April 17, and Phil Kearney succeeded Pete Franceschi as winner of the Pentathlon. 'Forty-two, led by Kearney, Franceschi, Mel Reid, Hon Zabala, took class honors for the day. In student body affairs, Bob Rossi was elected student body treasurer; Mark Golden and Phil Kearney won posts on the Board of Student Control; Mai McCarthy began his career as head yell leader. Ed Boessenecker was named editor and Ned Burns sports editor of the Foghorn. There was no brawl when Junior year rolled along. Jim Herning stepped back in as class president; Jack Kennedy was elected vice-president, Ned Burns, secretary-treasurer, Bill Lowery and A1 Lawson, class representatives. Down memory lane ... Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society, was established on the campus that year, and 'Forty-two became the first class to be honored with membership. Charter members were Ed Boessenecker, A1 Lawson, Bob McCarthy, Gene O'Meara, Bob Rossi and John Trimbur. High spot of that third year on the Hilltop was Junior Week, opening with the picnic, April 20 and climaxing with the Prom on April 26. Rancho Hacienda was the site of the picnic under Charley White's direction, with swimming, tennis, dinner, refreshment and just plain loafing at the spacious old Hearst Ranch. Remember Perc McPartland as master of ceremonies, the beer and refreshments afterwards? Wednesday came President's Day, another Kearney Pentathlon, and in the evening the Class of '42 attended the College Play, ''Brother Rat. Friday night, and Mai McCarthy's Senior Adios, the greatest show in Hilltop history —Joaquin Garay, Tommy Harris, Larry Chan, Frank E. Farre, the Mei Lings, Sonya Shaw—a farewell from '42 to '41.” Saturday night, the Junior Prom, the acme of the collegiate social year, and '42 trekked to the Colonial Room of San Francisco's Saint Francis Hotel, to the music of Bert Whiting's orchestra in a softly lighted Latin American atmosphere. Politics replaced the social. Phil Kearney edged out Bob Rossi to become student body president. A1 Lawson took over the debits and credits as treasurer. Unanimous acclamation re-elected Mai McCarthy head yell leader. In the black-robed judiciary John Trimbur and Ed Boessenecker stepped in as members of the Board of Student Control. Gene Sullivan accepted the sports editorship of the Foghorn, John Barbagelata taking over as business manager. Among the campus clubs. Saint Ives named Bob McCarthy its worthy chancellor; the Bio-Chems chose Bill Carter as dictator of the lower laboratories; Gene O'Meara became chief longhorn of the Philhistorians; and Ed Boessenecker became archon of the finer things for Kappa Lambda Sigma. And as in every journey the last home stretch soon enough must open up ahead, so inevitably it rolled around—the senior year. And significant it may have been that student government moved into newer and larger quarters, where more and more seniors could gather and bull between classes. The senior class elected Bob Rossi its president, Bill Lowery, vice-president, Tom Daly, secretary-treasurer, Jim Grealish and Charley White, representatives on the Executive Committee. There was a new headman and a new spirit in football that senior year. Pete Franceschi was backfield star of that team that came back after disastrous defeats to a tremendous success. Phil Kearney, Sam Johnstone, Gene Benedetti, Russ Kynoch, Tiger Smith, Tom Canepa, George Burtner, Bebe Mohr, Fred Haley, Charley White, The Easy Way Up Promenading Hey! Oh. Mimi! Buddies Rack 'Em Up. Ray The Great Profile all represented '42 on that Cravath-coached scoring machine. And behind that team was Mai McCarthy and his haba, and the unrelenting enthusiasm of a boisterous rooting section. Down memory lane . . . the Los Angeles excursion . . . the S. P. Coaster . . . southern hospitality . . . that impromptu Santa Clara game rally, and the explosive parade to Jeff's House, bursting downtown to the City Hall, then sweeping through a crowded Market Street, winding endlessly through downtown traffic ... the Mississippi State reception, the parade down Market Street, the fire engine, the City Hall Reception . . . Don Helbig and his Games Committee, Jim Connors, Ed Jennings, Art Eagen, Jim Grealish, et al., heyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyhey! December 7th and Pearl Harbor. Gloom over the Hilltop as 'Forty-two realizes it is the last class to make the four year journey for a number of years to come. The rush into R. O. T. C., the Marines, and the Navy's V-7. The gradual drift into the armed services, Pete Franceschi, Sam Johnstone, Ed Picetti, George Burtner, Tiger Smith. Blackout over the Green and Gold Room. The Buy a Jeep campaign, and the parade of the twenty jeeps. But even war could not completely dampen the spirits of 'Forty-two. The Winter Carnival went on, greater than ever, at the Fairmont Hotel, with Jim Herning, general coordinator. Gene Benedetti, in charge of construction. Gene Dunn and Gene O'Meara, of publicity, Bob Rossi and Jim Grealish, business managers. And so the rush of precious time through comprehensives and theses and orals. The last picnic came April 12 at the Rancho Hacienda in the sunny hills over Pleasanton. The retreat at El Retiro, the ADIOS Senior Book with Scandurra frantically photographing. Commencement, the Senior Exclusive, all loomed up larger and larger as the days of one class journey fade into memory. It has been a great journey, a splendid one, one whose highlights we have barely skimmed across, for it belongs more significantly to those smaller things, those friendships we have formed, that feeling of kinship four years of camaraderie have planted within us, the numerous bull sessions, the countless good times together that neither war nor peace will ever completely succeed in erasing from our minds, this journey of ours.
