Q € PRESENCE-ie PROMOTE no PRIDE ■ 134 PROMISES 168 PROGRESS •192 PRODUCTION■214 You’re away from me now, Not in space, but in time; I learned from you. You made me grow. You touched me. Our paths may never cross again But the moments that We once had, the laughing, the crying. And the rejoicing will never disappear From our memories. I cannot cry because you’re gone. I can only be grateful that You were once here. — Cecilia Hurtado 3 Daily masses at Uni give students the opportunity to find God in their own way. Masses are celebrated daily in the chapel and everyone is invited to participate. Special liturgies at Uni commemorate feasts such as Christmas, Easter, and all of the Holy Days of Obligation. Students have the opportunity to help in planning the liturgy and format of the Mass. The music is provided by Mr. Shafranske and all those willing to lend a voice. These masses give students the perfect opportunity to reach out in their own personal way, and share their religious beliefs with the rest of the Uni community. 5 This year’s Charity Bowi between University High and Saint Augustine proved to be an exciting footbaii contest. A powerfui running game and staunch defense gave the Dons an impressive 17-0 victory over the Saints. Strong team spirit and crowd participation were major factors in Uni’s strong showing. Through the cheerieaders’ abiiity to reach out and motivate the crowd, the Don team reaiized they had everyone’s support. S $- i« “: 8 The Charity Bowl between Uni and Saints this year was a successful event for us due to the organization by Mr. Dave Gorsich. Under his direction the Charity Bowl was an exciting evening of good football. Mothers and office workers dedicated their time in order to make the project a success. They spent long hours counting money and organizing ticket sales. Strategy is an important factor in any contest, and Coach Wargo and his staff did a fine job in preparing the team. School spirit was overwhelming throughout the day. Coaches, parents, students — everyone reached out to enjoy an evening of fun and excitement. 9 A SB ©ETS TIBIE BAEE E0ELIN© 10 The special duty of the A.S.B. Cabinet is to reach out to all Uni students. They act as communicators between students and the faculty. Through the A.S.B., student proposals are put into action and made known. The A.S.B. members are constantly working on coordinating dances, lunch time activities, club activities, etc. These officers have exhibited leadership qualities needed for successful student government and deserve our congratulations and appreciation. 12 The Presidio staff is responsibie for the fine yearbook here at Uni High. Through their dedication and participation in schooi activities, the yearbook continues to get better every year. Aii the staff members use this opportunity to reach out and show the Uni community what has happened during the year. They capture those fond, exciting, and cherishabie memories everyone wiii remember for the rest of their iives. 13 Halloween on campus this year was a strange experience. Participation was overwhelming from students and faculty. Disguised characters, ranged from the cookie monster to a pair of chickens, from a clown to a pair of mermaids. Everyone dressed up to share in the fun. Prizes were awarded for the best costume and for the best looking group costume. 16 ■flii R emembei ' that first day of school, E veryone so unaccustomed to what was happening. There are all kinds of activities and organiza¬ tions for Uni students to Join — to which they can reach out in their own special ways. People who want to reach out to the horizons of their minds can find inner, intellectual satisfac¬ tion in the Science, Rocket, or Chess Clubs. These clubs are not too conspicuous around campus but, quietly, they or¬ ganize and brew up the future Einsteins and Curies of the world. For those who feel the urge to be more conspicuous and have the need to reach out to others, there are dances, cheerleading, spirit week activities, Greek week. Hi Jinx, and the Pep Club. Most outsiders would think such in¬ volved people have some sort of superiority complex as they are heard shouting, We ' re number one! (But then we are.) For the people who want to reach out and get involved, but waver back and forth from radical in¬ volvement there are those some¬ what radical, somewhat intellect¬ ual, and quiet creative groups of people with compulsions to ex¬ press themselves--the Jesters and the El Cid staff. All of these special groups, reaching out to special types of people and bringing out leaders and good times are necessary to make up the total, involved community of University High. 109 much improved th . ® ' sPaPe Chief, SteL cy - ' say: paper is the best c Thi ' „ e e ' ' Staff Shelve uror of the Editoi ' i;=tl r the this year RSrfe? char Edhor alBoaTdT ‘ ' toh dents from every da. FRONT ROW: John Vertullo, Chris Goscienski, Guy Morissette, Mr. Collins, Lori Cameron. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Collins, the members of the science club endeavor to learn all they can about science and its related fields and equipment. Most science club members are interested in one or more of the various fields of physical science. The laser is of special interest to the whole group. Mem¬ bers learn more about these subjects by visiting scientific institutions, hearing guest speakers, and conducting laboratory investigations. This year, for the first time, the science club is allowed access to the school biology, chemistry, and physics labs. Here in the following pages we have tried to capture these memories, bringing them together to share them with everyone: memories like the Dons football triumphs with Frank Flournoy leading the team in touchdowns, and memories of the volleyball team struggling to the Western League Championship led by Nancy Loos and Maryjane Caudill. Many of our teams this year took Western League Champion¬ ship and even went to C.1 .F. Without the guidance and help of the coaches, these memories would not have been ours to share. The coaches reached out to their players with those extra hours of getting a play down right or raising a little more confidence among the team members. Touched by the enthusiasm and faith of their coaches, the players add their own individual touch. Combining a little extra inspiration and their spare time, the players aim for per¬ fection and go out to meet the competition. Sports at Uni touch each stu¬ dent ' s life in one way or another. Win or lose, these events bring us together. fF ' n 136 GOING CLOCKWISE: Steve goes for a touchdown pass Toby looks for an opening. A little bit of brain damage!! The results were stupendous and the scoring high. j Teachers offer PRomises for future yeors The faculty and administra¬ tion of Uni High reach out an and touch the students in very special ways—spiritual¬ ly, academically, and as friends. But perhaps just as important as these means of counseling and guidance is the way in which they, by their very life styles and daily examples, encourages every individual on campus to develop to his or her full potential and reach right back out to the world with a life dedicated to the service of his fellow man. To reach out and touch and accomplish the goal of friendship takes a special talent. Teachers break the barrier of uncertainty every day with a kind word, a smile, or a funny joke . The administrators and their efficient staff handle the everyday problems of manage¬ ment and school business, yet, they too are always happy to share a smile or chew the fat for a while . Problems are abated by the worthy counseling staff. Their concern can brighten any dreary day. And then, the patient maintainance staff—ready and willing at all times—they come through in times of need .All in all, friendship and love radiate in every direction from the faculty and staff. Their philosophy is that education is worthless if it does not prepare the student to sur¬ vive in the outside world. The need for a student to be able to express his thoughts with written sym¬ bols is very important. Lastly, we would like to say a special THANK YOU to Sr. Leonard Gaskell, for without her knowledge and direction this yearbook could not have been produced.
