Gerald Giles had no idea he would someday end up a prin- cipal at University High School. In fact he started out studying opera. He loved the theatre and wanted to be part of it. But before he could fulfill this dream he was whisked into the army. When he came back he worked for the aircraft industry. After eight years he went out to fulfill his dream again. His desire to express himself in the theatre led him to a job directing school plays. He would also teach English. He began teaching in Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio and New Jersey. . After years of teaching he heard there was an opening in San Diego. It was a principal's job. He came down to San Diego and looked over the school. He liked what he saw. We hope Mr. Giles will remain with us for a long stay. . a a Ye . By we? - a 25 oe With the beginning of school in September, many individuals wondered if having a new principal would change the daily routine. Gradually throughout the year we became more familiar with Mr. Giles as his easy-going person- ality became an encouraging part of each day. The initial hesitancy wearing off, we came to find an understanding friend and enthusi- astic leader in our principal . So, to Mr. Giles, with our thanks for being our friend and our lead- er, the yearbook staff dedicates Presidio '76.,

Self-expression Celebrating our 200th anniversary we think of the ways the people in our country have ex- pressed themselves through the ages. Ben Franklin expressed himself in his experi- ments and his writings; Washington expressed himself as a general and the father of our country; Betsy Ross expressed herself when making our flag; Francis Scott Key did it when he wrote our national anthem. Dolly Madison expressed herself through her cooking, Thomas Paine through his writing, Patrick Henry through his famous speeches, Florence Night- ingale through her nursing. Thomas Jefferson's way of expressing himself was in the writing of the Declaration. Daniel Boone's explorations were his way of self-expression. J.F . Kennedy expressed himself through his presidential power and Gerald Ford is expressing himself as President. All through history people have ex- pressed themselves. We express ourselves in many different ways-- a smile, a frown, a word, a sound, and an ac- tion. We express ourselves by the way we act or feel. If we are unhappy we express ourselves by frowning and or by expressing our unhappi- ness by words and tears. If we are happy we express ourselves in many ways at the same time. We smile, we laugh, we jump, we sing, and we cry when we're happy. The freedom of self-expression is given to each citizen of the United States by our fore- fathers. As students at University High School we are given the right to express ourselves in the way we choose. Some may decide to join a club, some may go out for sports, while others may decide to prove themselves in Aca- demics. We, the staff of Presidio '76, wish to show in this yearbook some of those who EXPRESSED THEMSELVES FREELY THIS YEAR, Nn a Se ee Min Fer iste ad = ie aves is re
