DEDICATION In 1947 John F. Quinn was appointed as Dean of Men and Veteran’s Councilor for the University of Rhode Island. To Rhode Island he brought the quali- ties of patient perseverance, leadership, and hard work as an athlete, scholar, adventurer, writer, and adminis- trator. In the fifteen years that he has been with us, he has assumed a position as a distinguished leader on the campus, and has shaped the destinies of many a student. In 1957 Dean Quinn was appointed to the posi- tion of GRIST Advisor and served in this capacity until this year when, upon being appointed Dean of Students, he was forced to relinquish his advisory position owing to his added responsibilities. To the man who has been a father, advisor, and friend to many, and especially to us; we, the staff of the 1963 GRIST, dedicate this book to John F. Quinn. Others have honored him for his many contributions to education, and many will honor him in the future, but they can never, in our estimation, honor him enough. 4

FRANCIS H. HORN President As the class of 1963, you are leaving your mark on the University of Rhode Island. At your graduation, your activities and accomplish- ments as a class become a part of the perma- nent record of your alma mater. We hope in return that we have left an indelible impression on you — that you have a new purposefulness and have set your feet upon a new path because of the patterns of thought and the knowledge that you have acquired here. But this is only the beginning of our asso- ciation. Like choosing a mate, in choosing a college you have made a life-time commitment. What you do throughout your life will affect the university because you are a product of URI, and by its products an organization is known. And this is only the beginning of your ed- ucation. If you and we have done even reason- ably well in the last four years, you will con- tinue to learn throughout your life. You will be one of those happy and interesting persons who is never the puppet of popular opinion and who measures the world by his own inner scale of values. Wherever you go and whatever you may do, the university will keep a continuing interest in you and your accomplishments. We hope that when you are near Kingston you will stop to see us and that you and the university will benefit from a close association through the coming years.
