------------ TI-IIE PROGRESS O TRANSIPORTATIUN HIEF VVASHAKIE sat within the door of his old teepee, looking out on the prairie where thousands of buffalo were grazing. Here was food for his tribe for years to come. Thus he sat dreaming of the peaceful days which were to ensue. Suddenly all his old worries were brought back to him. The beat of many horses' hoofs told him his warriors were coming. See ! cried one, pointing far to the left. A great white object was being drawn across the plains. The Indians were frightened. They did not know that within these covered wagons were women and children-the forerunner of VVestern Civilization. Many moons later Chief VVashakie was troubled to note that horses drawinff strange xehicles were being drix en across his hunting grounds. lhese stage coaches were frequently seen by his warriors-many xx ere never seen again. Ever more vxhite men were seen riding across the plains on horseback. lhey carried curious looking bags. At the next post another rider relieved the first of his precious charge. Often a rider would wait in xain. -X band of Indians had become hostile-thus the fate of many pony express riders xx as sealed. Chief XX ashakie looked out across the prairie. Not one great shaggy beast xx as in sight. Instead a huge black monster was bearing down upon him. The poor old Chief turned sadly away. 'l his coming of the Union Pacific had completely ruined him and his people. We regret to see the passing of old traditions in the VVest yet we welcome the progress of transportation in the Qtate. In the wake of the U. P. Frail came the Unixersity of VVyoming of which the 'secondary Training bchool is a part. lhe progress in transportation is but a measure of progress in Wyoming.
