ealication Few of us are aware of the quiet, unassuming man behind the carnpus landscape. Since 1933, Brother Ferdinand has been in charge of the Univer- sity lawns and gardens. Under his direction, s ome 17, 000 trees, shrubs, and bushes have been planted, the Grotto of Our Lady by St. Mary's hall has been one of his favorite projects. The rhodendron, azalea, and caniellia bushes which make the campus so beau- tiful in s p rin g a r e a result of his untiring efforts. Fresh flowers on the chapel altar and in many of the offices are an indication- of Brother's thoughtfulness, B rothe r Ferdinand ha s earned degrees in engineering and in architecture and was instructor for several years at Notre Dame. Until his retire- nient two ye ar s ago, he was associate professor of engineering at this University. Now his activities revolve chiefly around the gardens and lawns, where he is frequently to be seen working in his character- istic old clothes. In honor of this gentle man of the gardens, who illustrates so well in his daily life the simple vi r tu e s and quiet humility which best lead rn en to God, we dedicate the 1956 LOG to ......
