F. hut one without looking at f'The smoothest band in the nation , Fred- die Slack and his orchestra, proved to be just that when they turned up for the Soph-spon- sored Halloween dance October 27. The semi-formal dance jammed the auditorium of Education Hall with couples who found the dancing rather difficult, but the listening Wonderful. Slack favorites such as Cow-Cow Boogie, Dofwn the Road a Piece and Kitten on the Keys, kept the crowds gathered around the bandstand. Best liked of all as the orchestra's theme song, Strange Cargo. The orchestra 1eader's efforts at the piano were enough to satisfy the most avid Slack fans who turned out in large numbers for the first big name band of the year. To fit the Halloween theme, the Sopho- mores under Bud Smith decked the hall with pensive pumpkins, black paper cats, and witches equipped with the latest Fuller brush vehicles dangling from an overhead canopy of orange and black crepe paper. The tang of the fall air, the exhilara- ting effect of mustard on your coat sleeve, the erowd's excited roar over the play you couldn't see from behind the balloon salesman-Football! But foot- ball wouldn't be complete without the screaching, the cajoling, the uninhibited antics of the never tiring cheerleaders. Oh! what is so rare as a rally king in October! or who is so tired in December? This year Portland was blessed and confused with the lVlcCambridge twins, Dick and Don, as dual rally kings. Assist- ing thc twins were four rally girls from the College of Nursing. The fem' fatale angle from St. V's added the touch fand it might be said that it was very neatly addedj which was needed to bring the more backward students into violent cheering, for the team of course. They were Peg I-latch, quiet but con- vincingg Maggie Gandiaga, a terror on the P,-P.O. yellg Dot Senko, subtle charm and a loud voiceg and Pat O'Con- nor, five feet of smiling Trish. Occasion- ally from the sidelines came the old mas- ters of the art of stretching the vocal chords, Jack Vidoni and Bill Colbert, to give a helping leap. The success of a school's athletic team is dependent on the students who can choose to back a team or not back a team. That success is proven by the ability of the rally squad to represent the spirit of the students. This year we were a suc- cess. ' ll's the bestest band what am . . .' 9 Victory belles. COuch!J Caravan to the football game. The fire engine we can understand, but why the superintendent of hydrants?
