Gregarious by nature, the Greek never travels alone. He eats with his friends, sleeps in the House, and drinks with them at the Luna. He seldom studies without company; instead of going to the library or the Commons Room, he saves his assignments for the evening, when he can have a study session with either his brothers or a co-ed. His daytime hours, except for the classes that he occasionally attends, are spent in the Tuck Shop. This symbol of Greek unity becomes, during the noon hour, a crowded sweat box full of shouting, loudly laughing men and giggling co-eds. But the Tuck Shop is not only a place to congregate with one’s friends; it is a place to decide important questions and discuss serious problems. “ Who are you bringing to the Formal?” “How was your trip to Europe?” “Can you make the party Saturday night? Shivers of fear ran through the Greeks on the first day of rush season. They knew that, for the next ten days, they would have to keep the best side of their organization turned toward the rushees. And they were not mistaken. Rush was ten days of lunches at the House, ten nights of staying up until three in the morning, phoning rushees and making party arrangements, and ten days and nights when every conscious moment was spent smiling, smiling, smiling. The rushees welcomed the V. .P. treatment. Some were impressed and picked up their bids, while others decided to remain in the dorms. 28
