A bubbling test tube, a simmering retort, and the smell of guinea pigs were burned into the senses of the researcher. In the daylight hours, he worked as a graduate assistant. He answered the questions that had long since become an integral part of his life, showed the students the simple tricks of procedure that kept them from maiming themselves, and consoled his class on the day after a hairy lecture examination. His nights were spent in the buildings on the Hill; he knew the laboratories of Alumni Hall better than the wrinkles on his sweetheart's forehead. A nd during the long days and nights, he wondered if it was possible to finish his project before his grant ran out. 16
