Second, let me congratulate you upon having attained these degrees from a University, the traditions Of which reach back to a time prior to the or- ganization of the Nation, a time in which men of spiritual leadership, extraordinary in- tellectual ability, and far-sighted wisdom were drawing up a form of government that repre- sented in some ways a political experiment, and in other ways followed the thoughts which had been, with increasing importance, occupying the attention of theiwise men of Europe. To the men who participated in the deliberations from which came the form of government of the United States of America, the young institution, which has developed into the University of Pennsylvania, made a large contribution. Your inheritance as University graduates in- ei' vie 'tt cf- 'LU ig. 5 wi, Il f in Q N A E, - n?. I Q F? fwi V4 Q.. 1 B Q , .5 cj I H li Lt' 5 i s cludes the entire history of the Nation. It is a great thing to be academically the lineal de- 5 scendants of those who saw, as did our founder, Benjamin Franklin, that knowledge and the , applications of knowledge are useful to the well-being and happiness of men and communities. ,- It will well repay you to study the history of your University and to see how, throughout the 1 7, history of the Nation, it has always played an important part in those deliberations by which '- . ffiffi'-ff our form of government and our happiness as a people have been safeguarded and preserved. 3 is iffy.. . . V ' i You go forth on Commencement day as graduates of a University that has these great ,Tj A ,- traditions, and throughout its history has been true to them. You have sat under the teach- ing of great scholars, of men who have exemplified in their lives and in their' teachings the i x best thought of the best minds of all the ages. The community and the Nation of which fi '- J' f you are citizens may reasonably expect of you a higher type of devotion and service than Q that which it may expect from others who have not enjoyed your privileges. As a result of ' your education, you have been brought at least to the door of the world's great treasure ' if houses of thought and inspiration. It is your privilege as you proceed in life to enter further into those treasure houses and to take as your own what you find will be for your greatest ' 6 i permanent benefit. T f l 'git The wisdom of mankind is not all to be found in books or in museums or in works of art. ' It may also be acquired by daily contact with those who are intellectually your elders, and it J ' V may be imparted by you to those who are intellectually younger. You have therefore, a dou- p fr ble responsibility, one the responsibility for faithfulness to what the past has taught you and .J t to the memory and teachings of the great souls of the earth, the other a responsibility to those who, younver than you, will look to you for guidance and leadership. K . .O D . . . . . ff: 'K The University has opened the doors to you. Your life after leaving the University will Q3 demonstrate to you and to the world the value of the opportunities that you have had. 1 1 u n 1 l I I' l Qi In giving you this brief parting message, I do not wish you to feel that you are separating i g yourselves from the University, for you can never do that. Its service to you has been too '1 great to be forgotten, and its influence upon you will still be potent, though you live beyond big-gb the ordinary span of human life.
