This is the erection of Vlfeight- fill man Hall and the instigation of a ig plan of compulsory gym. requisite to graduation. To the present y undergraduate, who is compelled i A . . . , i to obtain gym. credit IH some way 2, ' or another, it seems almost unbe- - iiei na Q lievable that those who attended Al West Philadelphia Station N I' the University in 1880 had to pay an extra fee for gymnastic privileges, but that was the case. For when the first gymnasium was fitted up by the students in an ll old empty room in a basement, only subscribers were allowed to beneht from it. 93, Perhaps, though, some of the dearest memories connected with the campus that can be dug out of the past embody Pennsylvania's old and traditional ivy vines which have always been the symbol of friendship planted deep in the soil of a mutual trust and love. Clinging closer as it grows older and perishing not with A T the structure which upholds it, the ivy lives among the crumbling records of the past. It is ever being renewed in the physical sense by the succeeding graduating classes down through the years as they plant their vines and offer their last con- tribution to their Alma Mater on lvy Dayg while the tender spirit connected with A that final farewell is passed down to each new class and proclaimed to the world ' in songs that tell of all the glory behind the ivy-covered walls. The ivy is not meaningless. , 0 Thus it is that from the time the Hrst spray of ivy was rooted near the walls of College Hall by the Class of '73, on up through the years, the Pennsylvania Ig, campus has been growing richer and richer in tradition and has been gaining more and more prestige. A few of the bigger jumps of the first twenty-five years have been briefly touched on. The past quarter f century has seen equally as great enrichments and enlargements, and this brings one down . to the present time, the history-in-the-making rv, known to the graduates and undergraduates of today. ln the course of these four years that lv-as Vppv 'l,444,., have just passed, an unusually large amount 3? of expanding has taken place and spacious QL buildings have sprung up in scattered parts cf- A 93 Gale of the campus. Ms ' h One of the first structures to see Q-Liu completion in these last few years ffl was Bennett Hall which houses the School of Education. Situated on the corner of 34th and Walnut streets, it holds forth as a challenge to those who seek higher education. ln the spring of 1925 the Ath- Houston Hall letic Association set out on one of the bigger undertakings, namely, the double- decking of the Franklin Field stands With the growing of the undergraduate body, with the increasing numbers of alumni, and with fthe boosted interest taken in Pennsylvania's football games, it was felt that greater accommodations should be provided. Accordingly, the seating capacity of the stadium was enhanced, raising the figure from fifty-five to eighty-Hve thousand. . The early spring of the following year saw the ground broken in Big Quad in preparation for the erection of two new Freshman dormitories, and when the fall session of school opened, six months later, many of the newcomers started their University careers in these new quarters, Ashhurst and Magee. This addition of two buildings was just another step in the manyfold plan of enlarging the dormi- tory system. I The most recent improvement in the campus building plan was brought to the front last New Yearfs Day when, with Pennsylvania's victory over Yale in her first 5 League game of the season, the new Palestra was formally opened. This spacious structure, with its ten-thousand capacity, will more adequately and more nobly serve the Alma Mater in the years to come, than could its predecessor, Weightman Hall, which, being much smaller, was somewhat handicapped in its efforts. The accommodations afforded by the new Palestra will, however, provide for more than a mere basketball floor and stands for on- lookers. The other half of the building, when actually completed, will include one of the best equipped gymnasiums of its kind in this .7212 section of the country and two swimming- l 2 Provost Tower lifj lf? f f T .QI 20 Ip.. 1 I I Q it lg ., if , 5 rg l ill fri lr? , . if .ip 1,53 s' e L is 1' i X t 3 vu 1 lj i F i r ft? t . .WL F 2 f ,Q ..:3T,g ,li ff ,deff -fr.
