If F the plan of moving the University to Valley Forge is ever carried out, it is certain that there will be a sudden and extensive spread- flf ing-out. , jg The campus of 1878, with as an-ee buria- lligi ings, in reality could hardly be called a campus, especially considering the fact that one of these three was the University Hospi- tal Cthe other two being College Hall and ffl, Medical Hallj. The College Hall of that date is the College Hall of today, with vfery little change in outward appearance, The Lime Quad ', athough many thousands have frequented its halls and classrooms and all have contributed their bit toward its history. In the course of the next twenty years, the appearance of the University grounds was somewhat changed by the addition of twenty-hve buildings. Prior to 1891 there was no Library on the campus from which books could be secured. How g different this must have been! When the undergraduate of the present time or rl the graduate of recent years stops to consider the many hours every week that Q5 are spent within the four walls of this building, whether in concentrated study or in varied forms of idling diversion, he wonders how the students of forty or fifty years ago passed their time. l 73 lt was not until 1896 that the University had any dormitories, and even then lx they were many less in number than today. The same year saw the springing up ll, of Houston Hall where today the undergraduate whiles awayuhis vacant hours Qi and where University publications and numerous campus activities are housed. Z4 How peculiar the campus would look without these two central edilices. Q y Today, 'when athletics are mentioned at Pennsylvania, one immediately thinks of Franklin Field where football games are played and the Penn Relays hold sway or one's .g thoughts turn to River Field where innum- erable other contestslare fought g but such was not the case forty years ago. At that time the Athletic Association was maintaining a field at the corner of Thirty-Seventh and Spruce streets where the dormitories are now lil: located. . This is the erection of Vlfeight- fill man Hall and the instigation of a ig plan of compulsory gym. requisite to graduation. To the present y undergraduate, who is compelled i A . . . , i to obtain gym. credit IH some way 2, ' or another, it seems almost unbe- - iiei na Q lievable that those who attended Al West Philadelphia Station N I' the University in 1880 had to pay an extra fee for gymnastic privileges, but that was the case. For when the first gymnasium was fitted up by the students in an ll old empty room in a basement, only subscribers were allowed to beneht from it. 93, Perhaps, though, some of the dearest memories connected with the campus that can be dug out of the past embody Pennsylvania's old and traditional ivy vines which have always been the symbol of friendship planted deep in the soil of a mutual trust and love. Clinging closer as it grows older and perishing not with A T the structure which upholds it, the ivy lives among the crumbling records of the past. It is ever being renewed in the physical sense by the succeeding graduating classes down through the years as they plant their vines and offer their last con- tribution to their Alma Mater on lvy Dayg while the tender spirit connected with A that final farewell is passed down to each new class and proclaimed to the world ' in songs that tell of all the glory behind the ivy-covered walls. The ivy is not meaningless. , 0 Thus it is that from the time the Hrst spray of ivy was rooted near the walls of College Hall by the Class of '73, on up through the years, the Pennsylvania Ig, campus has been growing richer and richer in tradition and has been gaining more and more prestige. A few of the bigger jumps of the first twenty-five years have been briefly touched on. The past quarter f century has seen equally as great enrichments and enlargements, and this brings one down . to the present time, the history-in-the-making rv, known to the graduates and undergraduates of today. ln the course of these four years that lv-as Vppv 'l,444,., have just passed, an unusually large amount 3? of expanding has taken place and spacious QL buildings have sprung up in scattered parts cf- A 93 Gale of the campus.
