If F the plan of moving the University to Valley Forge is ever carried out, it is certain that there will be a sudden and extensive spread- flf ing-out. , jg The campus of 1878, with as an-ee buria- lligi ings, in reality could hardly be called a campus, especially considering the fact that one of these three was the University Hospi- tal Cthe other two being College Hall and ffl, Medical Hallj. The College Hall of that date is the College Hall of today, with vfery little change in outward appearance, The Lime Quad ', athough many thousands have frequented its halls and classrooms and all have contributed their bit toward its history. In the course of the next twenty years, the appearance of the University grounds was somewhat changed by the addition of twenty-hve buildings. Prior to 1891 there was no Library on the campus from which books could be secured. How g different this must have been! When the undergraduate of the present time or rl the graduate of recent years stops to consider the many hours every week that Q5 are spent within the four walls of this building, whether in concentrated study or in varied forms of idling diversion, he wonders how the students of forty or fifty years ago passed their time. l 73 lt was not until 1896 that the University had any dormitories, and even then lx they were many less in number than today. The same year saw the springing up ll, of Houston Hall where today the undergraduate whiles awayuhis vacant hours Qi and where University publications and numerous campus activities are housed. Z4 How peculiar the campus would look without these two central edilices. Q y Today, 'when athletics are mentioned at Pennsylvania, one immediately thinks of Franklin Field where football games are played and the Penn Relays hold sway or one's .g thoughts turn to River Field where innum- erable other contestslare fought g but such was not the case forty years ago. At that time the Athletic Association was maintaining a field at the corner of Thirty-Seventh and Spruce streets where the dormitories are now lil: located. .
