cot-loooe and ccncy- ree NE of the cheeriest inventions of modern living is the week-end . We believe that the majority of people will concur with this affirmation: of its whole- hearted acceptance by Normal School students there is no question. The popularity of the week-end lies mainly in the release it offers to mind and body from routine and constraint. It is an avenue of escape or respite from the problems of life - or so we like to think. Of course, the problems are still there: but the prospect of a forty-eight hour period in which to give the fickle will free rein is some- thing few persons can resist. lust how does a Normal School student spend the week-end? Since there exists no such creature as an average student, it is impossible to generalize on this point. Speak- ing for the small group of us in residence together, I can say that even here individual- istic tendencies and preferences are much in evidence. This is but a confirmation of the fact that there is a general desire to slough off the irksome restrictions of school life and to go one's own Way. Friday evening, for instance, finds one of us llucky girl D home- ward bound: two others try to enjoy the same experience vicariously by writing letters: a fourth individual sits comfortably ensconced with a book and a box of chocolates: the re-maining three giggle and fuss as they get ready to go out with their dates . In short, Friday evening is rarely, if ever, given up to serious pursuits. Saturday is inevitably chore day. There is Washing to be done, and, of course, mending and ironing: that purchase of nylons to be made: that bedroom to be tidied up: that parcel to be mailed: that trip to one of the Government offices, in quest of material for next Week's practice teaching. A curious fact about these tasks is that they are just as laborious as some of the regular school work but they are not so regarded by off duty students. Well, after all, happiness is a point of view. The arrival of Sunday is generally welcomed by most of us since the fulfilment of religious duties solves the problem of find- ing a way to spend the morning. Cn the afternoon and evening activities of this day, I need not elaborate lest I become repetitious. I must confess, however, that, as the week- end draws to a finish, one by one each student seeks out her school books, with an outward appearance of pained resignation but with an inward sneaking feeling of eagerness. Of course, it has been a grand week-end, and the fickle will has had its fling. But how good it is to be back in harness once more! ANGELE DROUILLARD. Qtape '50 ELERINS passants aventuriers voila ce que nous sommes I Tout passe , if ,., 27 'Ftifft oui, meme la lus belle annee, les P , heures les plus enchanteresses, ecou- lees a l'Ecole normale. ff Tout passe . . . DENISE COUSINEAU.
