1l'H- Yl'O 1' LI I CONSEIL DES ETUDIANTS - PREMIER SEMESTRE tDe gauche 51. droitet ASSISES: Sceur Marie-de-la-Confiance, Mlles Lorraine Barbeau, Therese Labelle, Soeur Bernadette-de-Jesus. DEBOUT: M. Julien Pezet, Mlle Marie-Jeanne Dufour, M. Maurice Laurin. 'Spice canal Shine, NE of the attributes of a teacher is the ability to express himself clearly cor rectly, cmd convincingly. Apart 'from JGEJI' - - his many functions as an educator, it is obvious that even within his narrower role of instructor his speech habits are of supreme importance. A teacher is constantly in front of a class, and his example will per- force influence his listeners for good or for ill The better to impress upon us fledgelings the importance of this attainment in a teacher, each year there is organized in the Normal School a Literary Society devoted to literary. dramatic, debating, and discussion activities. Membership, as well as attendance, is com- pulsory upon all. In short, it is the students' forum, and affords abundant opportunity for each of us to rise and shine . The first intimation that the individual usually gets cf his scheduled performance is when he is approached by his class representative on the Students' Council. Tactfully, the latter bro-'aches the subject and, within moments, Wheedles the surprised student into accepting the assignment. From then on, the responsi- bility is the student's own. With some misgivings at first, but with manful determination, he for shel plunges into the task of preparation. Frequently, he seeks the help or advice of a trusted friend. The appointed day dawns, and with it some of his confidence Wanes. When his turn arrives on the programme, he is, perhaps. somewhat ill at ease. He may start a bit uncertainly from his place, appear flushed under the collar as he mounts the platform, and take up his stance like a schoolboy. His voice sounds hollow and his hands flutter aimlessly. But as he launches into his sub- ject, the room ceases to swim, his poise returns, and he warms to his audience. He finishes his discourse with a gracious gesture and re- sumes his seat. His equanimity is restored and a growing sense of confidence brings the realization that there has been nothing un- usual in his experience. He has made his debut before the Literary Society.
