RIBBON A GA TE We climbed a hill and near the top Reflected light caused me to stop. A yellow stone with streaks of blood Lay partly covered in the mud. The rain had washed its polished faceg The sun had found its hiding place And set its workmanship aglow. Its depth was more than outward show. Who knows the tedious years it took To place the pages of this book. These leaves of light and darkness made From grains of sand exactly laid. Painstaldng care alone could make A substance to withstand the quake And grind of awful crushing weight Surpassing that of human fate. When our lives are brought to light, May they show the signs of fight, - Of careful use of grains of sand, The finished product of our hand. -Ivan Allen ABOVE -Marv and Kathy Peterson. Hagge, Foole Many months ago, when many of you found I was to be your yearbook editor, you may have said to yourselves, I-loo-hah. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whenl got roped into this job late one night after too many bottles of the pride of Portland, little did I realize what lay ahead. For instance, l never tired of hearing answers to my constant inquiry, What happened to that film you promised me last week? Ex- cuses ranged from Oh, I took two rolls, but they didn't turn out. to A big dog ate them on the way to school. Despite this and many other inconveniences QTwo weeks in the Rubber Room at Salem during which much of the captioning was completedj, and no film at all received from the Sophomores, I feel some notable im- provements have been made, to wit: Take the new faculty photographs. Please. After ten years of looking at the pictures the faculty must surely have provided in their resumees when they first applied for work here, I decided on new photos. A mistake. Ever try to get a whole department together in one place at one time? Impossible. Apologies to those left out. Too bad you had to go eat at the Carnival that Wednesday. Immodest asl am, I couldn't have endured without the crucial help of several people I promise not to blackmail any more. First of all, thanx and a tip of the Hagge homburg to Kent Lee, who helped take and develop many fine photographs and helped lay out the faculty pages. I owe him a debt of enormous gratitude and twenty-five cents. So modest, he refused to provide a photo of himself. Next, mucho gracias to Dor Stangel, who photographed, de- signed and laid out the Sophomore Hygiene pages and refused to give me any pictures of the nude swimming party. Stacy McLaughlin took all those great portraits of the Freshman Hygiene class. Bruce Laurie andjim Barless took the juniors' photos among many others 5 Poor Jim will be your next yearbook editor R.I. P. Kent Howard, Pete English and john Bug-ni all took keen pictures too. Rich Knight took the Frosh and many picnic pictures and helped with identification, Thanks, Rich. Thanks also to my wife, jan, and my sister-in-law jean Mac- pherson who somehow managed to sort out the photos, copy sheets, and layout pages I threw at them trying to meet deadlines. In the past, the yearbook has been mostly a Senior Show. This year, every effort was made to bolster the presence of the other classes, al- though special consideration was given to those students who purchased the book. I hope that my work with this publication will provide you with a source of facts, memories and, hopefully, some amusing entertainment in the years to come, And not become a dust col- lector on that old shelf in the attic or basement. In closing, I am reminded of the words of my friendjill Hayner, who said, If you aren't crazy, Mark, then it's all the rest of us.
