Once the opinion prevailed that a university is an institution for the culti- vation merely of speculative, theoretical and aesthetic tastes, a so-called re- public of learning, or agency for engendering an intellectual aristocracy, and that it should be properly located under classic shades and in romantic surroundings remote from the work-a-day world. But our modern world with its spirit of mastery, its highly organized industry, its political and social purpo- siveness, its demand for scientific specialism, technical skill, and trained ef- ficiency, will no longer brook such a divorce of higher education from practical affairs. The times demand that educational ideals and aims be democratic, humanitarian and practical. More than ever Wisdom, like the tabernacle of old, must take up its abode in the midst of the people. They must be brought within at least a street car fare of every person craving and ready to use these advantages. Actuated by such considerations as the foregoing and by a sincere civic pride and devotion, a group of representative citizens organized themselves, in the early summer of 1908, into a Board of Trustees and began the active pro- motion of the movement for the founding of a non-sectarian, co-educational institution of higher liberal, professional and technical learning under such auspices as would conduce to the highest type of intelligent and efficient citizen- ship. This Board incorporated as the University of Omaha on October 8, 1908, and inaugurated its educational work on September 14, 1909, with an enroll- ment of 26 students.
