Bodas de Sangre OU's World Premier Ballet A lonely mother, her youngest son's wedding and the son's tragic death are part of the plot of Bodas de Sangre, a world premier ballet pre- sented in April at OU's Rupel' I. Iones Theater. Bodas de Sangre, based on Garcia Lorca's tragic drama Blood Wedding, was composed especially for OU by famed Spanish composer Carlos Surinach. The dramatic stage tragedy by Lorca was termed a powerfully passionate modern tragedy ranking with Romeo and Iuliet. It was written by Lorca in 1933, but the iclga of transforming it to a ballet is not quite as o . Miquel Terekhov, choreographer of the ballet, said the idea for the adaptation began in 1969 when he and another member of the OU drama faculty discussed the possibilities of the trans- formation. Then in October 1976, Surinach vis- ited the OU campus. Terekhov mentioned the idea to the composer and after the scenario was sent, Surinach agreed to write the score. Surinach completed the score in August 1978 and hand-delivered it to members of the Fine Arts faculty. I-Ie returned to the University several times as work progressed toward the debut and was in the audience at the world pre- miere. The project was made available through the Mark Allen Everett Foundation with additional funding arranged by former President Paul F. Sharp through the President's Council of the University. An original ballet complete with a score by a composer of Surinach's stature most certainly will bring the university to the attention of the worlds of theater, dance and music, Dr. Nat Eek, dean of the OU College of Fine Arts, said. The Spanish composer has been commis- sioned by numerous symphony orchestras in the United States writing various scores in the field of dance. In 1979, with the help of Surinach, members of the fine arts faculty and the students who danced in Bodas de Sangre were at the pirouette of the world ballet.
