Knights in Armor talk to their ladies-in-waiting while waiting to joust. 16 - MEDIEVAL FAIR Medieval Fair Once upon a time, in a not-so-faraway place, the townspeople of a hamlet decided to set aside a sunny spring afternoon to relax, rejoice and be merry. After transforming their marketplace into a showplace of artisans and merry makers, the festival was set - the people danced, the singers sang and the knights slayed a few uninvited dragons. Sound familiar? Well, it's OU's Medieval Fair. Held each April, the Medieval Fair recreates a village of the Middle Ages on the South Gval in an effort to acquaint the university community with the days of yore. The festival grew out of a Chaucer research project by the English department and has grown into a multi- departmental effort. Beginning with the Coronation of the king and queen, the festival lasts until Sundown. The- day's activities include palm readers, a puppeteer, a human chess game and a 20 foot dragon meandering through the fair. Troupes of wandering players re-enact Shakesperean plays, madrigal pageants, comedies and mysteries, pro- viding medieval entertainment for the villagers of the South Oval.
