THE YEAR Individual events are the elements that make up the entire year at the University of Oklahoma, and it is the important events that we remember. Because of the production schedule of the Sooner, we will highlight these important events that made up the twelve months from February 1978 to February 1979. Ianuary 31,1978 The OU Budget Council debated a motion to disband itself due to lack of influence in budgetary matters. The vote was postponed. February 2, 1978 The score for an original ballet based on Garcia Lorcia's Blood Wedding will be written for OU by famed Span- ish composer Carlos Surinach, Nat Eck, dean of the Fine Arts College, announced. February 3,1978 Enrollment figures for the spring 1978 semester showed another drop in the total number of students enrolled on the Norman campus. February 6, 1978 Paige Mulhollan, dean of the Arts and Sciences College, announced that the foreign language requirement for stu- dents would be dropped. This move was taken to bring the college into compliance with the state regents. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare announced that OU would have to recruit more black stu- dents to achieve appropriate desegregation levels. February 7,1978 The OU Budget Council voted down its own motion to disband itself. February 8,1978 The OU Health Sciences Center announced a 160-stu- dent increase in enrollment over the previous spring semester. February 9,1978 Provost Barbara Uehling announced that the grade point average for all students at OU was slightly higher in 1977 than in 1976. The overall average rose from a 2.47 to 2.77. February 14, 1978 President Paul Sharp announced a 3.4 percent across the board reallocation of all university monies was plan- ned for 1978-79. February 16,1978 The OU Board of Re ents appointed a Presidential Search Committee to fintfa replacement for retiring Presi- dent Paul Sharp. February 24, 1978 Provost Barbara Uehling was selected as chancellor of the University of Missouri's Columbia campus, leaving OU with the top three administrative posts to fill. Polish critic, novelist and poet Czeslaw Milosz was named as the Laureate of the 1978 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, a 310,000 biennial award given at OU. 12 - THE YEAR March 23, 1978 Henry B. Crichlow, outspoken director of the Petroleum and Geological Engineering Department, announced he was not being reappointed to that position. March 24, 1978 Larry Lacewell, assistant coach and defensive coordina- tor for the OU football team, announced he was resigning to enter private business, stating, I have often stated that the day I made my decision to leave the University of Oklahoma would be the saddest day of my life. March 27,1978 Representative from Playboy magazine began a week long search in Norman for a Playmate Perfect for the 25th anniversary edition.
