Beta Theta Pi ’7 ■ .. fc .y ffi V • The Year of the Dragon was the key phrase at 800 Chautauqua for 1972-73. With a member overall grade point average of 3.014 for the past year, the 8etas. aided by The Dragon , retained the scholarship trophy. With fall and intramural sports in full Swing. he Betas acquired an early lead in the newly-initiated All-College standings. They ran and passed their way to first place victories in B and C Football and Beta B team captured the All Fraternity Football Championship. The social calendar, brighter than ever this ear. started with a Victory Party. Next they eminisccd with the Beta 50‘s Party, then rolled into Dallas in October for a big Texas weekend. After that came the party that only Betas know how to throw, the oldest party on on campus, the Beta Barn Dance. But Betas did more than just have a good time. Beta Theta Pi took an active part in community services. They helped sponsor the Special Olympics, served on Big Brother programs and aided with special tutoring services for ore-college students. Still, parties, rallies and various functions can never mirror all that is real for Betas. It is brotherhood which makes the effort worthwhile. Delta Kappa Epsilon This year the Dckes initiated an associate member program to replace the traditional pledge program. The ten associate members were allowed to attend house meetings and to vote. Although they were not allowed to attend chapter meetings until they were initiated as full members, associates were not expected to perform regular pledge duties such as doing all of the house work. One of the major projects for the year was redecorating the Delta Kappa Epsilon house. New windows and carpeting were put into the house. Also, the outside trim was repainted. The men of DKE placed fourth on the fraternity grade point scale this year. They also participated in intramurals football, basketball. volleyball, and softball. The Deke social calendar included several cocktail parties along with the annual Graveyard party which highlighted the fall semester. For this open campus party. Dekes and their dates dressed in Halloween costumes. During the spring, members held the Diamond Formal and the Deke Drunk. Mom Lester, housemother of the Deke house for many years, retired at the end of the spring semester.
