T IS this vast, swiftly- l 0 moving seat of learn- ' ' ing, this multi-colored backdrop for the four most . V formative years of your life that we have depicted in this, the 1938 edition of the SOONER YEARBOOK. There could be no more appropriate object for dedication of this vol- ume than a man who has been an integral part of the University of Okla- homa and the State of Oklahoma for a quarter of a century . . . twenty-five years which constituted the span between their bud and blossom. That man is Dr. Edward Everett Dale. Too few students in the university realize what Dr. Dale has done for his institution and his state. Too few appreciate the fact that he is the greatest living authority on the history of Oklahoma and the great West. ' X , Q ibf' ' ' P s 'gk XX fxx ' K f ix? Perhaps his most magnificent achievement, one that stamps him as a true, vigorous Oklahoma patriot, is the Prank Phil- lips Historical Collection, located in the east wing of the university library. The Phillips Collection is, in Dr. Dale's own words, his baby, Aided by a fund he secured from Mn Frank Phillips, Ponca City oil man, Dr. Dale has searched out and ac- - quired in the past ten years over 60,000 valuable books, manuscripts and photo- graphs which comprise the most complete library of Okla- homa and Indian history in existence. lt is, then, to Dr. Dale, unobtrusive but unparalleled, that the l938 SOONER is respectfully and proudly dedica.ted. But come closer. Our tour of the University of Okla- homa starts here. rdlrm - r ' - 53:4 51 . ' tkx- V 5-1 ad I4' X N 'I GX: i xi -ii 1 Q0 Q 0.0 I '. x X Q. At the end of the Oval, its gaunt Gothic towers breathing sturdiness, is the Administration Building, university nerve-center. ln this building, where policies are created and corrected, where the countless ramifications of specialized education are co-ordinated and guided, our tour begins. ln the pages of this book, we shall lead you through O. U.'s exteriors and interiors, accenting personalities. You will be introduced to each school's dean and prominent faculty members. We shall visit Owen and Haskell Fields and the other athletic grounds for an action review of Sooners in their l937-38 struggle for sports prominence. We have an appointment with the commandant for an inspec- tion tour of the university Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Punctuating the trip at regular intervals, your guide will point out various objects, the significance of which you have probably never known. So, if you will follow me .
