Tl-IE U IVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL By A. H. VAN VLEET, Dean T h e G r a d u a t e School was organized in 1909- Previous to that time, some grad- uate work had been given under the super- vision of a committee of the general faculty. first graduate was conferred The degree in 1900. In 1911, two years after the school was organized, five received the Master's degree. In 1921, twenty-four received advanced d e g r.e e s This indicates a nor- mal growth commensurate with the growth of the University- The increasing demand by the high schools of the State for teachers holding advanced de- grees has made it necessary to provide oppor- tunities for teachers to secure such degrees without sacrificing their positions in doing so. This demand has been very successfully met through the summer sessions and through the correspondence courses. The Master's degree may be secured by completing the work of three summer sessions in residence, and eight additional hours through correspondence cour- ses. That the teachers are availing themselves of these opportunities is evidenced by the fact that 146 graduate students were enrolled dur- ing the last summer session, and fourteen are now enrolled in correspondence courses. The growth of the Graduate School is, neces- sarily, dependent upon the growth of the un- dergraduate schools and colleges. Every effort is being made to increase the facilities for ad- vanced work as the demand for such work occurs. ,.,,., ,,,. ,. .U .,..E,. .,, .. ,, Hz, . M X , COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES By J. S. BUCHANAN, Dean The organization of 1 the College of Arts and Sciences dates from the beginning of the University in 1892. It was the only school on the campus with the exception of the Pharmacy School until about 1904- Dur- ing this time the Uni- versity of Oklahoma became fairly well es- tablished and became recognized by the lead- ing colleges of the t country, being admit- ted to the North Cen- tral Association of Colleges- It is the center of the University of Okla- homa, out of which the professional schools have grown, and around which they are grouped. A large part of the instruction is foundational for the best Work of the profes- sional schools, which show a growing tendency to require one or more years of general college training for admission. The Medical School and the School of Education require two years and the School of Law one year of college training. The College of Arts and Sciences affords many of its students an oportunity to test them- selves in various fields of scholastic endeavors pending the time when they shall discover the dominant interests of their lives. It also pre- sents subjects and groups of subjects directly related to the student's chosen life of profes- sional endeavor- For this purpose there are within the College of Arts and Sciences organ- ized the schools of Journalism, Public and Private Business, Social Service and, until re- cently, the Schools of Education and Home Economics.
