GUVER 0R R YMO D G RY Greetings to the Students and Faculty of the University ot Oklahoma It is a privilege for me to have this opportunity to greet the students and the faculty of the University through this 1955 SOONER YEARBOOK. Communication and complete understanding of our state affairs is probably one of our most difficult problems. How can you help your state and your nation? By taking part in the activities of the political party of your c oice and by being an active citizen. Only through the participation of our most intelligent peo- ple can we hope to maintain and improve the kind of government which all of us wish. Many of you must prepare, through political experi- ence, to assume the responsibility which my generation is now shoulderin . I have been active for many years in the political affitirs of our state and it has been, for me, a very satisfying experience. I can point to a few instances where I know that we have a better state be- cause many of us worked hard at the problem which confronted Oklahoma. Each new generation must face problems more com- plex than those met by previous generations. This is, I suppose, because our problems increase with our com- plexity of living. This will be true of Oklahoma as it as been, and will be true, for our nation. It is fortunate that we have been able to produce in our state such a really superior state University. The training you receive will be the ideal preparation to help your state and your nation tomorrow. I know from experience that it is not an easy thing to have your own business to maintain and your own livelihood to secure and still find time to be active in the affairs of city, county and state. But it can be done and has been done often b men and women in our state. I believe that each of, you will become increas- ingly aware of your responsibilities of citizenship. I know that when you take up your share of state citi- zenship that we will be able to build a finer Oklahoma for all of those who will one day live in our state. I appreciate being asked to talk to you on this page. To the graduates, I would like to extend the congratu- lations of both Mrs. Gary and myself on reaching a very prized and valuable goal in your life.
