Potpourri . Do your best, thats all thats expected . . . and that is whatl have tried to do this year, but you, the students, will decide ifit was worth it. The book is finished, and as I look over old cgp and layouts the only question that I think about is, Will thi students like it? I was extremely fortunate this year in having an all volun- teer staff. They sold more advertising this year than in previ- ous years, and that is what made it possible to give you THE LIEUTENANT 1971. Sponsors Captain Holmes - thanks for your support and advice - and Cathy Sublett, I hopg 1 didn't give you too much trouble with those head shots. Tony Clark deserves special thanks, he held the staff togeth- er for selling advertising and accomplished many tedious jobs, Colonel Land, thanks for signing the printing contract and taking such an interest in the progress of the book. The cadre who helped me cut corners - thanks. Special thanks goes to a person who only a few of you know, Mark Miller. Without him we probably wouldn't have had a book this year. ' All in all, it was a lot of work, but fun, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Don Burk C on ten ts Dedication ............. . 4 Leadership-K ey to Success . . 5 Summer Camp 1970 . . T0 A Person Who as Lzstenea' And H ehned ver 2,500 Cadets Twenty years and over 2,500 cadets ago Betty Ross came to the Army ROTC department at the University of Oklahoma. She has seen so many cadets become offi- cers that names are forgotten, but the faces will always be a part of her memory. Looking back over the number of students I've seen graduate with commissions, I have no difficulty remem- bering their faces or problems. But, when they walk up on the stage to receive those gold bars, I just can't re- member all of those names. To some of the students she is just the woman in charge of room 7, where you go to pick-up your check, but to many she is the woman who listens to your prob- lems and gives you advice about what to do about them. She understands and tries to help in any way possible. Mrs. Ross has served the department since 1951, and is the chief military personnel clerk. Along with seeing so many young men receive their commissions she has wit- nessed her two sons, Lanny in 1958, and John in 1967, receive their commissions at GU. Working here has certainly been a rewarding experi- ence . . . after I have worked with these young men for several years, a few of them will write to me after their graduation. Sometimes I will arrive at work and have a box of candy with a note on it from some graduate? The staff of THE LIEUTENANT 1971, the cadets in the program, and the past 2,500 students who have re- ceived their commission and have known you, we can only repay you in a small way for so much work and devotion on your part, we dedicate this book, THE LIEUTENANT 1971, to you, Mrs. Ross, with the deep- est respect and thanks. THE LIEUTENANTI971 Dedzcaled To BETT ROSS
