Membership in this national honorary society is based on both military and academic excellence. The organization is designed to foster understanding of the obligations of citi- zenship and to prepare it's members to be better officers in meeting their mili- tary obligation. Thecadets of Scabbard and Blade annually sponsor the Army ROTC Mil- itary Ball, and the selection of the eight finalists for Honorary Cadet Colonel. Their other projects range from blood bank drives to helping the underprivi- leged in and around Norman. Society members endeavor to im- prove their military skills through extra training activities, company-sponsored talks by officers on active duty and vis- its to military bases. Here members of Pershing Rifles demonstrate different drill patterns. ' ' 4 ' To foster a spirit of friendship and coop- eration among men in the military depart- ment and to maintain a highly efficient drill company. This is the purpose of the Persh- ing Rifles as propounded by its distinguished founder in the early l890's. Pershing Rifles, national military fraterni- ty, is an' organization dedicated' to building men. Pershing Rifles teaches a -man self-dis- cipline. The military training received in Pershing Rifles is designed to make one an outstanding cadet. Pershing Rifles teaches the methods of fancy and standard drill, tac- tics and company administration that are needed by a young second lieutenant just graduated from college and ROTC. ' During the school year a Pershing Rifle- man takes part in pledge smokers, pledge party, Christmas and. New Year's 'get-to- gethers, Military Ball and the White Rose Ball the first semester and the Spring Ban- quet the second semester.
