COLONEL LAND 4 Colonel Land Changes Army Roto Program In the second year as Professor of Military Science at the University of Oklahoma, Colonel Leroy C. Land brought about new changes into the ROTC program. This included a change in the advanced program with a reduction in class- room hours. Colonel Land is also in the process of remap- ing the program at OU. Before Colonel Land assumed command at OU he had been on tour in Germany and Vietnam. Colonel Land entered military service in 1940 after grad- uating from Utah State Agricultural College where he re- ceived a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He also received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California Institute of Technology in 1948. Colonel Land is a field artilleryman and has served in various command and staff assignments. He has been sta- tioned in Italy, Germany, Alaska, Korea and Vietnam. Colonel Land holds 17 United States and eight foreign decorations which include four Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Joint Services Commenda- tion Medal and two Army Commendation Medals. First semester Brigade C0mmander, Cadet Colonel James Shirey is a sociology major and member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Though born in Norman, Jim has lived the typical Army brata' life, moving from place to place, He plans to make the Army a career, choosing infrantry for his branch assignment. Jim participated in the flight pro- gram in conjunction with ROTC and was selected as a Dis- tinguished Military Student. C adel Brzgade Commanders Shoulder Command 9 Cadet Colonel Harry M. Turner took charge as the sec- ond semester Brigade Commander. Harry is a chemical engineering major from Dallas, Texas. After fulfilling his two year military obligation in Air Defense Artillery, he plans to return to graduate school to get his Masters Degree in engineering. Harry is a member of Sigma Tau, an honor- ary engineering society and was co-chairman for the Engi- neer Week Open House. He is also a member of S.A.M.E. and is a Distinguished Military Student.
