Mr. Robert F. O ' Brien, Band Director. Marching Band The Notre Dame Marching Band appeared this year in a variety of colorful performances. The Band of the Fighting Irish played at five home football games as well as the Notre Dame-Pitt game at Pittsburgh. The marching unit also appeared before the Chicago Cardinal -Philadelphia Eagle game in Chicago on November 4, the Old Timers ' game, and in the St. Patrick ' s Day parade at Bay City, Michigan. NCAA statistics indicated that the band was viewed by more than 60,000,000 people over tele- vision, and the 95 band members appeared before more than 500,000 people in person. The band, led by drum major Richard Kopituk, is one of the few college units that doesn ' t use sheet music when it plays. This necessitates the memoriza- tion of 12-13 songs for each half-time performance, though this number is reduced when a visiting band also performs. Mr. Robert F. O ' Brien, band director, estimates that some 1500 man hours are put in each week in drawing up a show. Drum major R. Kopituk leading the band. ' f
