President Constantine W. Curris Your First Degree UNI A Personal University was a statement made by Presi- dent Constantine Curris. Curris said he wanted UNI to be the Premiere Undergrad- uate University in the state ' and to have a nationally recognized general education program Curtis, UNI s seventh president, succeeding John J Kamerick, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1962, magna cum laude, with a B.A in political science and a speech communication minor Upon his arrival to UNI, Curris discov- ered what he called a disconcerting lack of specific goals for the University Curris said, ‘ I view the development of such direction and its attention properties to be the major task we face, and I plan to devote consider- able time and energy. Curris wants to set up some kind of struc- ture or climate that will allow people throughout the University to feel as if they have a say in the future of this University. Curris is a man who likes to keep in touch with all areas of the University. That is evi- dent by his immediate goals: to study UNl's finances, get to know the people he s work- ing with and become acquainted with the students. Curris believes everyone ' in a universi- ty, including the President should attempt to have a genuine relationship with students and to view them as adults capable of mak- ing intelligent decisions. Curris is interested in all aspects of the University. It s my style to know what's going on He says part of the responsibility of the president's office is the coordination of all areas of the University. I've found that becoming familiar with operations and what people are doing is vital if you're going to try to insure the quality of decision mak- ing at the executive level. On a long range basis. Curris wants to see the University develop and to aid and abet that development to a point of National distinction and recognition, so that it is rec- ognized in all quarters, as one of three great Universities of Iowa. He believes that each institution should develop its own sense of identity. Curris brings to the office a strong belief that excellence in all aspects of the Universi- ty is the way to achieve a quality educational framework for students and building that central framework, he says, is his foremost responsibility.
