A Translation Certification Program is now being emphasized by the Depart- ment of Modern Languages. Certified competence in the form of a diploma is available. Work has been done in the past few years to build up the graduate program. One of the largest graduate operations is study in institutes abroad. Around 150 students participated in programs abroad in the summer of 1981. Courses in French, German. Spanish, and Russian are currently offered. 30 Academics

Theodore Hovel English Serves As Background A good English program prepares students for a variety of careers. It serves as an excellent background for professional opportunities in teaching, business, industry, advertising, public relations, or further study as a gra- duate. The department sponsors a number of activities throughout the year, one of which is the annual Christmas “Read- In”. Students and faculty meet to pre- sent their poetry, prose, fiction, essay and dramatic works. A Student as Crit- ic Conference is held each spring. Cri- tiques arc presented by high school and college students and teachers from across the state on literature of their choice. One requirement of all UNI students is the passing of the department’s Writ- ing Competency Exam. The essay test is offered twice each semester. Academic» 29

School Of Music Boasts Top-Rated Musical Groups The School of Music boasts many top-rated musical organizations. Among them arc the award-winning Jazz Band I, which has won several prestigious jazz festivals and which most recently appeared as the top univer- sity jazz band at the National Association of Jazz Educators in Chicago; and the UNI Wind Ensemble, which recently has been guest band at the College Band Directors National Association Convention in Madison, Wisconsin. Other outstanding musical groups have earned excellent reputations. These include UNI Lyric Theatre, Concert Chorale, and Varsity Men’s Glee Club.
