It serves as an excellent background for professional opportunities in teaching, business, industry, advertising, public relations, or further study as a gra- duate. The department sponsors a number of activities throughout the year, one of which is the annual Christmas “Read- In”. Students and faculty meet to pre- sent their poetry, prose, fiction, essay and dramatic works. A Student as Crit- ic Conference is held each spring. Cri- tiques arc presented by high school and college students and teachers from across the state on literature of their choice. One requirement of all UNI students is the passing of the department’s Writ- ing Competency Exam. The essay test is offered twice each semester. Academic» 29
