New Directions For fl Rich Heritage From its one hundred foot high vantage point, the Campanile has been a part of the University of Northern Iowa since 1926. The tower was raised as a memorial to the founders and builders of the Iowa State Teachers College as part of the fiftieth anniversary of the school. One of the most notable features of the Campanile is the carillon, a bell instrument of at least 23 bells. The UNI instrument has 47 bells. Perhaps because of its position in the middle of the campus, traditions concerning the Campanile have evolved. Traditionally a female stu- dent at UNI is not really a coed until she is kissed at midnight in the shadow of the Campanile. Each year there is a “mass campaniling” to hear the homecoming carillon concert. OLD GOLD University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls

This untitled metal sculpture was built in front of the Industrial Technology Center in 1978 by Robert Engman, professor of Fine Arts in the graduate school of the University of Pennsylvania. Engman’s work was chosen because it best reflects the industrial technology discipline. The sculpture weighs 4,300 pounds and is made from 1,536 cor-ten steel rods. This type of steel oxidizes by itself and forms a protective rust coating and then also stops the process by itself.
